nu looking for mill also help with birdseye
« on: December 24, 2003, 08:04:08 am »
great site I'm shopping around right now pretty sure I want a circle mill probably a swing but maybe a md
I want to start cutting it up instead of just cutting it down and I have allready grabbed a ton of info here
while i was looking at a used mill the other day  I lucked out on a big ol  soft maple covered in burls from top to bottom and now I sure need some help knowing how to cut it up I'm a novice turner too so I thought I just had a bunch of burl blanks but from a few posts on this site maybe some of this log should be quatersawn for figure do i just shave burls off the side an saw the rest or sort of quarter up the tree and cut blanks  I dont know where to start and iI dont want to mess it up - tree is real green and wet I  haven't got it home yet and I didnt take a picture of the log but here is a slice off o a short chunk sawed  off to get acouple of bowls off of. The burls are about 5 inches on average and surround the tree
thanks in advance

Welcome Fallerman,

Must be cutting some big stuff up there in BC.

Good luck and have fun with your research.  It is truly hard to understand how a swing blade works until you see one operate....that sold me on it.

Be sure to reply if you have some direct questions, there is a lot of experience here on Forestry Forum.

Welcome to the forum Fallerman! I own and operate an MD, so if you have any questions about this type of mill just let me know. Good luck  on your burls.

Hi, Fallerman
I just bought a Peterson swingblade mill myself, and am itching to get it up and running.
If your maple is birdseye, definitely plain-saw it, not quarter, if you want the "eyes" to look like.. well.. eyes.
Curly maple on the other hand shows its curl best quartersawn.
If it's all burl, who knows? Maybe cut a piece off an end and slice it up a few different ways to see how they look. You can always chuck the pieces in the lathe later.
I would say based on your description and photo, just saw big fat slabs off all 4 sides, which can be cut up into bowl blanks or even resawn into boards. Then see what the square cant looks like.
Good luck,
George

Welcome fallerman.

I live in Pemberton, and have a MD too. It's under the snow right now,but if you are heading down to the coast in the spring, give me a shout.I also know a guy with a Lucas in Lillooet that would give you a demo,if you wanted to see a swinger working.

What type of mill was it you were looking at the other day?

The Peterson Automated 10"x20" cut sawmill is crated up and will be heading toward the states in the coming week or so so get in touch if you want to learn more about this machine (this mill is primarily a demonstration mill, they are now available and on the market in the US and AUS). It's fully automated and around the same price as the MD so if you want to compare apples with apples...

If you want to go multi blade, there's Mahoe's mill the "Mini Max" aswell (they make a nice simplified version of the MD, also NZ made :)). Research the pro's and con's well before you buy, it may give you more business options in the future.
Have a great Christmas*.
Jake.

Welcome, a board, Fallerman.  I have just the mill for you.  I have three MD Mills and am planning on selling one of the three to the very first person that arrives with the $, to make me happy. ;D  You can have it, with or without the trailer, such a deal.  You can sneek down the coast just after the first of the year and pick up your new toy.   8)

Hey, fallerman! :)  Glad to have you here. I have a MD 128, and I love it. Have you checked out   ?  Lots of good deals on there. That's where I located my mill. Stick around and keep us posted on your findings.

Gidday Herald, the automated is heading toward the west coast and will be demonstrated at shows there first. A show schedule has to be decided for the rest of the states, I would say that the deciding factor will be the size and potential of the shows. The marketing team will be researching this so feel free to give us some suggestions.

The automated mill won't be sold, it will be staying in the states just for public or personal demonstrations.

I'll be heading to Aus in a couple of months to attend the Oz Timber demonstrations with one of the automated mills, which will be interesting.

Hi Jake.   There were several of us at the Moultrie, Ga. show in October. There were many brands of Sawmills, including Lucas, MD, Baker, WM, Oscar, and a few smaller manufacturers. There was very good interest shown. Ya might wanna contact Sawmill John, of MD. He should be able to give an honest opinion.
