I never owned one but I'm positive the saw on the left is a Jonsered 81.

The 81 was a "West Coast" version of the 801 - I suspect the saw is an 80 (look at the air filter).

Look at the rear handle not a 80. Older design then 80.

Yes we need a better picture of the rear handle. Has antivibe  but the rear handle shape is not from a 80 or 90. The round metal silver plates covering the anti vibe rubber mounts for the top handle is what a 80 or 90 has , the smaller 621 does not have these plates. These plates were movement restrictors to prevent tearing the rubber mounts with longer bars in bigger wood.
One of the 1st anti vibe models?

The cylinder is very large as compared to either the 621 or the 70. I'll go down today and snap a few more pics. I have an 80 apart right now, sort of a sad saw story...but maybe I'll post some of it as we decide its future.

The 80 and 87 cc engines have a 3mm longer stroke.

I agree Niko, but that air filter is held on with the flat 621 cap cover not the thick round air filter cap cover  the 80 uses.
 From the style of the av mounts the saw is 80cc or larger.
I saw that style of rear handle posted on AS a few years back but for the life of me I can't find it.

What we need to get anywhere with the ID is better pictures of that rear handle, anyway. I wonder if it could be a non-Jonsereds one, based on the existing picture.......

The rear handle looks different in those pictures - I am (still) pretty sure it is an 80, with a 621 filter cover on it. That actually is an understatement, I am very close to 100.0% sure that it is......

Is there any letter on the case above the fuel cap?

I don't see how you can conclude it is a 621 filter cover from that picture - but it will do the job on an 80 as well.

That first picture of the rear handle threw me off. Now I can see with the latest picture this saw is a Jonsered 80 with a 621 filter cover.

Definately not a 621.
- 621 has double triggers [rear trigger is safety lock]
- fast idle lock button is on top of 621 rear handle ,80 is on side of rear handle.
- 621 has external rubber av mount at rear of rear handle.
- 80, 801, 90 have the movement restrictor plates covering top handle mounts as shown in photo, 621 don't have these.
-90 has a decompression button on top of cylinder,621, 80 and 801 don't have one.
-this saw in photo has upward angled round airfilter, both 621, 80 have this. 801,90 have verticle positioned square shaped 2 piece airfilter.

Is it worth piecing together and bringing this thing back to life? I think I have most of what I need to get it running...missing a cover or three that I'm certain will show up over time.

The Jonsereds 80 was my favorite over the 801 or 90. Yes its worthwhgile to rebuild.
 The 80 was more compact with its smaller rewind housing and top cover. But the best feature of the 80 was it was about 3/4 lb. lighter then the 801/90. The 80 has alot of compression and not having a decomp was a hinderence for a few operators, but the guys I knew who used the 80 were no wimps

It looks like a simple effective design...also looks like an easy one to mod based on that 90 cylinder I had. Maybe I'll try and acquire the 80/90 blend with a bad bottom end and build the 80 with that stuff (owner of the 80/90 willing) with a mild port clean up and muffler mod. Wonder if it responds as well as the 920 and 2094 did to minor tweaking. It would be fun to get it to the same level of power that bully 385XP that hangs around this place has! (Like the 2094 & 920 have already)

Any idea what the best was to re finish that bottom end to Jred..red would be? Bead blast and power coat? Can that work with those old mag cases?

If I remember correctly the Jonsered 90 didn't seem to have anymore power then the 80. But if your doing a porting mod then the extra cc displacement won't hurt. I would like like to see you put a 90 p/c on this 80, drill the hole in the silver top cover for the decomp button and then you have the best of both worlds. Don't forget to use the compact 80 rewind housing.
Refinishing the saw? There are more educated folks on this site who can give good advice.
 You may find what your looking for about refinishing in that Jonsered 111 Hot Saw Project literature I sent you.

I had to bring this thread back to life, after running into an old timer today cutting wood with a Jonsered 90 in mint condition.
 I was taking down trees today for a customer with my 372 Husky. He told me to leave the wood treelength and he would buck them up himself. At first I thought he had a Jonsered 70 but he was cutting faster then what my 372 would cut. So upon a closer look I could see it was a 90 Jonsered. The saw was mint , even all the decals were still intact.
I asked him if I could give it a try seeing I haven't run my own long lost 90 since the late 1970s.
Running that saw was like shaking hands with a long lost old buddy.

The cast letter above the fuel cap is the key. Is it a P?

Seasons are changing back around to chainsaws...hay is (mostly) in..wood ops starting....looking to pick projects for this winter. This saw is a candidate....along with upgrades to existing project saws already posted last years season....Husqvarna's 268-272 & a couple of 920's
