February Thaw
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:32:10 am »
Today it is suppose to hit in the low 50's here in northern Wisconsin which will be the highest temperature since early November - well above the average of 25 degrees.   This winter we averaged well below that average for over 8 weeks in the low teens and now we are nearly 30 above average.  All week it has been in the 40's and yesterday I started worrying for the first time about muddy conditions?   Never can I remember a February thaw like this one.   One good thing though is the snow in the woods is now down to only knee level.  I never thought I would say this but bring back the cold weather.....

We have a thaw also in Ohio but the ground thawed out under the snow so we are pretty well done till the snow leaves and it turns off cold again. I pressured washed all my equipment yesturday and made a few welds on on a log bunk that took a pretty good hit this past month. Sure makes for some long days so maybe I will look at some standing timber I have received a few calls and forest marked jobs.

I had 50.0 yesterday at the house and 50.7 today. I do remember one thaw that was worse. On a guess maybe 20 years ago I was down to my T-shirt in Feb. My favorite is 0-range temps with little snow till mid-March then a quick breakup.

ahlkey , I am 100% with you on the bring back the cold idea :D

It was supposed to be here today already but I have 28 degrees on the thermometer right now and that is not quite enough to make things hard again. Right now the wind is blowing like crazy and it is obvious the cold is coming with it. But how long it will stay here is hard to say. I normally figure 2nd week in March is about the time to call it quits and then the road bans go on here but I am ready to pull out and call it quits as soon as it gets cold enough to get things squared away and moved out.

Been mild here for a couple of days, but the snow still looks deep. :D It's going to tighten up tonight in the 20's and colder Sunday. And new snow riding that cold front is staying in southern Maine from Bangor area south I guess. It's suppose to be windy here for the next week.  :-\

Oh well no fire in the furnace tonight again, too Dang hot.  :) Whew!!  smiley_sweat_drop

We got all of the snow thawed off the roof as of today, just in time for the major winter storm predicted for later this weekend.

40 mile winds here today. They had to close the South Peak chair lift down today at Caberfae due to the high winds. Hope it's better tomorrow since I have a timber cruise to do.

Yeah Jeff I had to move a big bunch of it off the shed with the roof rake before this thaw. 30x12x2.5 deep And there was still a lot to come down, but the sun yesterday loosened it up. There was a small patch at a V way up there 30 feet high between the main attic and the attic over the main house. My brother figured he'd park a few feet from the house when he stopped in. ;D

We were back to a little bit more of normal conditions the past two days but unfortunately they are now forecasting up to 12 inches of new snow during the next 36 hours.   Not so pleased with the snow but having it colder will help get all the loads out of the landing next week.

Got pretty warm here last week, Saw 50's even some 60's, Melted off most the snow below 6000ft. Made it a bit messy in the woods. Yesterday got cold and today we got 10" of snow and its still falling.. Well that will make being in the woods great..

It ain't spring until I hear killdeer and robins, so just stop it tight now. :D :D

It will be a sad spring when we don't hear the little killdeers return.

It was 30 F  here today and there was water in front of the barn from that warm sun bouncing off the metal siding. ;D Adding wood to the furnace was a mistake, got windows open. My natural, free air exchanger: wind counter clockwise to open, clockwise to close. :D

One to two feet of new snow expected, toss a coin, call heads or tails, spin like a top, stand on your toe tips and touch your nose, pick a number between 1 and 24 don't let the spring door slap ya on the way out with the shovel. :D

Have a look at our forecast on this page.  It don't look like we got spring here for a while yet.

http://www.friendlyforecast.com/canada/sk_saskatchewan/weather.php?db=55

We don't need a fast thaw here or we are in for some serious flooding.  The ground is saturated and all waterbodies are so full from a really wet year last year.  The old timers don't ever remember so much water. :-[.  The government has already announced there will be a flood relief programs for farmers.  Towns and villages will get flood relief moneys as well.  The town workers here have been digging one  of the main creeks out to help remove water  from the whole west side of town.

Last summer was a welcomes dry stretch for a change, but from October to December we had a foot of water. St Stephen flooded and that has never happened, ever.

33 degrees below Celsius is a long way from a February thaw. At this rate we will be looking for a July thaw in time for an August freeze up. we have double digit MINUS temps for this entire week including day time temps and this is March.  http://www.theweathernetwork.com/fourteenday/caab0186?ref=qlink_st_14day

Take a look. It'll shiver your timbers and make make ur blood run cold.

I don't think it was even that cold the night that Sam McGee was cremated.

Right now(7:30AM) it is - 36 C with an extreme wind chill warning of -48C to - 52C. Schools are  closed according to local radio station and RCMP have a necessary travel only advisory in effect. The sky is clear right now but it supposed "warm up" to - 24 and start to snow again.

If Al Gore stuck his head out in this weather it would freeze solid in 10 seconds or less but then it don't take long to freeze air.

FYI in general. Snow pack on the Columbia Ice Field is apparently ABOVE NORMAL for the 4th year in a row and over all snow pack on the glacier has recovered well over 50% of the estimated loss from the warmer spell we had that ended in 98, (according to environment Canada). And that snow pack recovery is in the last 4 years only. Looks like we are stacking up for 2 years record snow in a row. I know a scientist that works on the project and have sent him an email to check those numbers.

Estimates say it will take 10 to 15 years to see significant effects of the extra weight of ice pushing the "Toe" ice back out toward the Jasper park way. Apparently last year the Toe did not "shrink back" as expected.

Again I am checking the "mythology" To confirm. Wouldn't want to pull an Al Gore. That would be legendary sorta like Guy Fawkes. :D
