I'm no expert on chickens, but what I remember mostly up here were Plymouth Rock and Rhode Island Red. I liked them because of their feathers. Can't comment on the eggs, but I bet they are as good as any. Those Plymouth Rock roosters were real mean buggers when they had a little harem. A good club and a boiling pot is always handy. :D

Foxes are too thick around here and I've never seen a fence that would keep a chicken in and all the wildlife out. :D

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

If you are looking at production egg layers , get white leghorns. They laye white eggs year round. If you want brown eggs , most of the " reds " will laye brown eggs at a good rate also . I have road Island reds here, they laye 5 to 6 eggs/week each. I also have a few little BAntys that are great at nesting, but that would need for you to keep a rooster, don't know if that is part of the palace, would the King have a  thrown  ???

When I had chickens, about 6 years straight,I just went to the feed store for shavings, white pine.
Ironwood,I just used some junk plywood for the floor, about 6 inches of shavings, add some every so often and clean it once a month and the floor is still good. But that was only a 8 foot square coop with no more than 30 chickens at a time.I would put at least a 4 inch something in front of the door to keep the shavings in.Makes it easier,I found out.If you are getting chicks put a light on those critters.I never got into the red heat lamp deal.I just used a simple clamp light with a 100 watt bulb to keep them nice and warm. Not many died on me when they was chicks. But when they were turned loose all the raiding animals like to dine at thecfarm.  ;D

Thanks guys, got in at 2am from insulating the coop and sheeting the inside with masonite (free from a demo job, even prepainted ;D), insulation was "Curbside Pickup" from nieghbors (been bagged in storage for 6 years ::)), Building ws free "drag away from other nieghbor, just had to drag it down the road with the crawler ::) Nothing like having the nieghbors think your a little off you rocker.

I drug another one 8' x 20' from another neighbor up the street the other direction, used the 550 to drag it up the road, thought I was going so fast it was smoking, here there was a tire w/ out rim dragging under the floor ;D. I had two buddies block traffic for the 1/4 mile trip down the street ;D
