Poplar Anomaly
« on: January 20, 2011, 08:44:38 pm »
Greetings,
From the photo, can anyone please tell me what this is?
I thought I was cutting a rather stale Poplar log that had been sitting for about a year.
My worker thought it would be great for making electric guitar bodies.
Appreciated.....

I believe that is caused by mineral deposits.  it probably won't keep the awesome color as it dries

Yes, looks like mineral stained yellow poplar.

I'll bet it only looked like that for a little bit. That looks like one of the neat things only the sawyer gets to see.  Oxidation I am sure has removed the spectacular look by now.

That's the kind of color I used to see in Magnolia.

I run into a lot of different stains on poplar.  The colors can range from blue to black to purple.  The colors are usually caused by some sort of damage to the tree, logging damage being the most common.  You'll also get black streaks from some past beetle infestation.  The grey in the sapwood is caused by blue stain.

My experience has been that the color always fades.  The blue is caused by potassium deposits, if I recall my college profs.  After put to the air, you'll get oxidation; and that causes it to fade.

I did have some success in keeping the color of some poplar that I turned by freezing it right after cutting.  Immediately after turning it was finished.

I know exactly what that is.... it is beautiful ;)

Sawing can really be surprising.  Is the color holding?

It's my experience that the purple will hold better than the green. The green will go to brown, but the contrast will last pretty well.

On some walnut logs when you open them up the color is beautiful. Greens and purples and such but unfortunately it lasts for a very short time. I think of it as God's gift to sawyers.  :)

I sent a sample of this off to a scientist who said it was a common fungus.
The name for the wood is Rainbow Poplar.

It sold like hotcakes and the color did not fade.

Thanks for all the input.
