Introductions and Thanks!
« on: January 01, 2011, 09:46:48 pm »
I want to introduce myself and say thanks to all the folks on the forum. I've been mining information for a while and you folks have helped me select, buy and heavily modify a starter sawmill and build a solar kiln, not to mention cut up a bunch of lumber for use on my farm.  You've also answered many questions I've had along the way.  Seems like every time I had a question, I could do a search of your website and usually find the answer. I've also noticed the forum members go to great lengths to be civil and helpful to greenhorns and experts alike.  So since it looks like I'll be around for a while, I thought it was high time for me to say "How do."

Welcome, and agree with you about this forum.  Only been through Alabama once, we had a son who went to Full  Sail in Orlando, and went there once to visit him. Couldn't believe how polite people were in Alabama.  My wife was navigating, and once exclaimed "You're in the wrong lane!" cars were bumper to bumper, I put my turn signal on and the guy next to me slowed down and let me move into the right lane.  Have to say that was the first time in my life that had happened.  Here at home, people will try to keep you in the wrong lane past your corner.
My name's Jim, I like wood.

Thanks for the kind words.  Hazel Green is only a few miles from me, I'm through there all the time.
I've been real happy with my LT-15, and have been using it to cut dimensional lumber, siding, and fencing for my cattle farm because I got tired of going to Lowe's and spending a fortune on wood for livestock and equipment sheds, coops, stables and such.  Every time I got tired of a repetitive process on the manual mill, I tried to install a fix to make it easier.  I built a trailer under the mill, a 2-plane clamp using an electric winch as a windlass for clamping, a boat hydraulic steering ram for the raise/lower movement, a winch log claw, and mounted a lever so I could operate the log dogs at one time.
I built the kiln because it seemed like an enjoyable project, and who doesn't need bug free, stable wood for furniture?
I've got plenty of no cost hardwood from clearing my fence lines and picking up storm damaged trees on my property, instead of just putting them in a burn pile.
I'll put some pics in my gallery
