How many chains have broken on you?
« on: November 24, 2003, 10:14:43 pm »
I've been using a chain saw since i was 14 "when we first got one", and in 6 years "im 20 now" ive only broken 3.

all on hidden metal sadly. once on a rim that a tree grew over. once on a rock "kickback pushed the saw up into a huge rock" and the 3rd time was on a 8"spike, it was about 3/4" in diameter.

2 of those times the chain was being used for the first time which really ticked me off. but overall thgat isnt to bad for being a young guy. im really careful now, and always check around what im cutting before i start "if i think there may be metal in the area".

oh and i've been hit by the chain twice, once when it broke on the rock deflected onto my shoulder. "no damage :)"

and the second time was because of the spike. strangely enough it didnt go shooting start ooff, it came back and wrapped around my hand "the one by the chain brake". but that didnt no damage either, i was wearing insulated leather gloves :).

In thirty plus years I remember only two instances. One in a holly tree with embedded metal. Another while bucking a 54" log , again embedded metal.

Only one. Chain was coasting to a stop and I swung the bar around and bumped the rim on the skidder. :-[  Broke the chain and blew out the sprocket nose in one fell swoop.

I've broken quiet a few.  ::)  But it's my fault, I like an aggressive saw.
Aggressively filed chain + frozen hardwood timber + large horsepower saw = broken chains

I never broke a chain before however I know the feeling when you are cutting a tree and feel something but not to sure what it is until you pull out your chainsaw and look at your brand new chain some of the teeth tips chipped away. Kind of makes you feel all warm inside.  Still don't feel to good about it.  Dave

busted afew usually just lost teeth hitting iron. when a kid aabout 16 had a tree grab the saw away from me cause of metal and I pulled it back into my leg just cut the jeans not much blood, but i learned respect that day!
years ago at the  true value hardware down the road the owner made some chains for me and he didn't roll the rivits anywhere right.that day first chain came apart and flew off front of bar
I was stumping where an old fence line was so blew it off put on a new chain and decided to cut up some trees that were down  for firewood another chain came apart and looped around a big hickory and chain wasn't long enough to hit me.I brought them all back they came apart at his link..and we had an arguement about it,he got cocky tried to blame it off on me some how .he lucked out and shut up before loosing his teeth.
I have saw afew chain cuts and don't want one.
at another place they were either not rolled enough or so tight that you couldn't move them .guess at times they spin and don't even look at them.
got sick of messing with others so  I bought  chain in rolls elsewhere and started making my own, then a sharpener  and that solved my chain problems.

I have only broken two chains. One on a spike in a stump  i was trimming off. The otherone was  my fault, I was trimming the butts off of some logs,  as the saw was idling down I turned around swinging the the bar and my brand new chain into the end of the trailor >:(

I usually run a chain til there isn't anything left to file or it breaks whichever comes first.  It's normally 50/50.  I have broken them in frozen wood too but have never hit any hardware that resulted in a break.  Barbed wire usually just takes off the points ;D

I've never thought a broken chain was a big deal.  In my experience they either fly out in front of you or wind up around the chain catcher in the side cover.

What was he doing cutting over his head?  I had one slice my pants leg once but it seems for one to get his face the saw had to be up pretty high

Jeez, I read this thread a few days ago thinking hey, I've never broken or thrown a chain.  Yesterday I start cutting some brush and threw the chain on the 3rd tree!  It was tensioned right but the brush somehow wedged the chain or something.

Gouged the shiney chain catcher all up!

I got my first chainsaw at about 13 and I have never broken a single chain yet, they just stretch out so far that I cant call them a .375 pitch they become about a .390 pitch instead. Or I just run the chain until there is pretty much nothing left to sharpen. The closest to breaking a chain I ever cam was when I was 13 and runnig an electric saw cutting a small stump, the saw caught  on a knot in the wood and got stuck in the stump, I had to hit the nose of the bar with a 6lb hammer to get it out, chipping a cutter link in the process.
