440d brakes

Just finishing a John Deere 440d standard shift up in the shop. Had the transmission out and rebuilt it. Put it back together and went through the process of bleeding the main brake. Went by the service manual. Had good petal, moved it around the shop and shut it off. Started up this morning and it acted like air in the system so we bled it again but cant get no pedal. Skidder steers good but now the blade chatters when raising it but I can push the blade down and pick the front end off the ground. Oil levels are up and we replaced the filter again figuring it might be contaminated. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

there must be a charge pump in the trans everything ok with that???

My 440 does this alot, generally involes.. Low oil, Air, or if its cold below 25*.. But in generally pulls out of it after playing with it for a few minutes.. Steering full turn left & Right iseems too be the best fix

Gonna run it a little longer tomorrow. I think it must be air working thru if not I'll check the pump pressure. This one requires pressure to release the parking brake, which it does so I don't think pressure is a problem. Thinking I might have a piece of crud stuck in the priority valve. Not sure. I'll see what tomorrow brings.

not very familiar with the hydraulics on thtat machine, but I have seen a loose or cracked fitting/hose allow the pump to suck air and cause the hydraulics to be jumpy.

Have you blead the bleeder fitting on top of the axle housing on each axle?

I didn't know there was a bleeder on the axles. I went by the book to bleed it and it never said nothing about that. Haven't had time to play with it, in the process of moving to the next job. When I get a rainy day this week, I'll head to the shop and check it out. Thanks for the info. Would be nice if that is all that is wrong.

You might be thinking of the grease zerks those aren't bleeders. The chattering in the hydraulics goes away when it warms up most of the time unless fluid is low. Brakes sound like you have air in there.

Inboard off the axle housing ,actualy on the carrier case is a bleeder that bleeds the brake pistons, where the axle housing bolts to the diff. case on the top side for each axle, these are not greese fittings and were on every J.D. I ever worked on.

OK got you, I didn't know there was a bleeder up under there.
