Autumn

Well, not many days left here in Michigan. With the rain and the wind, our leaves are coming down fast.

Here is a picture taken in my yard a few minutes ago during a break in the rain.

We've got a lot of pretty trees too but we've also had 5" of rain in the past couple of days.

I took this picture of our mule Walter and horse Marlin standing in the mist yesterday about noon.

Saw the first serious southbound geese a few minutes ago. They've been playing and stretching but these guys were definitely on the red eye special.
Colors peaked here at 1:53 PM Oct 13 :D

Almost hate to admit it but this month's Martha Stewart (Nov)
(yeah I know that's irony, sitting in a camper on a jobsite reading Martha :D )has 2 articles of interest. One on Chestnuts, calls them the grain that grows on trees, more starch less oil than other nuts. One 3 oz serving has 170 calories vs 540 for a serving of walnuts.Five chestnuts provide 40% of the RDA of vitamin C. The other article was on  Elms  talking about advances in Dutch Elm Disease resistance in various cultivars...I guess you could say they are from Sports of trees in Ohio where the disease first appeared and on the mall in DC.

Lovely pictures. I still own my place in West Virginia (800 miles away from my home in Maine!)- and right now the main thing of value is the timber and the views, such as you capture. The land is so similar! I knew they must still have a lot of green- all of the maples but those with the deepest roots and greatest shelter have now lost their leaves up here in Maine (but the oaks are just coming into their own with purple/red/brown magnificence, just more muted and gradual.)

The symphony of colors is of an intangible value. You can't measure it in board feet, find a market for it, build houses with it, or even capture it as a scent (my own passion). But it has value that can only be measured in the experience. I even forget from year to year just how delightful it will be.

Thank you for sharing. :)               lw

I took a stroll this morning in search of some beautiful fall colors in Florida to put on the forum for everyone to enjoy but..alas.....I've had no success.   Everything is still green and I worked up such a sweat that I'm heading for the shower and a change of clothes. :-[

Don't you believe that sad-face smiley. It's a sign thingie he had on the back of his head as he's walking toward the shower. He's really  :D :D :D as he pictures us turning green ::) with envy. Hee hee..it was almost 70* here today, and should go like that for 2 more days. Of course, I don't have off til Monday, when it's due to be wet and back down to the 40's. I won't be green then- more like blue...but my yard still isn't frozen- I've got just a leetle bit more yard work to do.. ;)   lw

Yeah, fall kinda came to a halt here too. 76d yesterday upper 60's today and sunny. Gonna be warmer than usual Deer Hunting opener tomorrow, glad I'm waiting for muzzle loader season.  :)
Not that I'm complaining just yet, cuz we got way more to do than we ought to be able to get done, and weather like this is gold right about now.

You brought up deer hunting. This is the first year since I was 12 that I did not bow hunt. I don't know why. No urge at all. Some of my most vivid memories are from times spent in the woods during bow season.:-/

It has happened !  It's really here ! Fall in Florida at Tom's place.

I have been waiting and waiting for this to happen.  You folks have been showing all those pretty leaves on your trees and I just knew we were going to have some too.  As I was coming home this evening I noticed this forest of Chinese Tallow had turned to beautiful golden yellows and orange.

Ah-h-h Fall is wonderful......the brisk air......the colors.........

Know how you feel Tom. Not much color around here either. Little bit on the spanish oaks, some of them anyway. the rest just went straight to brown and dropped their leaves. Cedar elms don't look to bad. A little color, but mostly yellow. Don't know what the cold stuff all you northers are talking about feals like. The wife and I have been lighting a fire in the wood stove to look at and then opening the doors and windows and turning the fans on high to keep from sweltering. Did get a lot of rain the other day, six inches in about eight hours. No cool though. Maybe 55* at night, 70's in the day. May try to take a picture or two tomorrow. LeeB 8)
