Mill pond drained - logs available
« on: July 01, 2010, 06:48:36 am »
I just found this over that the TF Guild web site:

The City of Springfield, OR is accepting proposals to salvage sinker logs, could be some good stuff here...

Yes, this could be a real treasure and may be worth several people partnering and even worth the storing on borrowed or rented land.

The logs will have to be processed quickly or they will deteriorate, especially if they have been submerged for a long period of time.  Having a small, portable mill may be an advantage.  You can spend more time getting the "goody" from the logs than a big production mill.

It would be advantageous to have another pond in which the logs could be stored or the ability to sprinkle the logs heavily.

It sounds like a project that the city should partner with small business.  If they could pull out the logs and have the equipment to move them, small business sawmills could  produce lumber for themselves and the city.

Think maybe if you turned Jimmy from S&S Aqua Logging (on Axe Men) loose in there he could find some "sinker logs"?  ;D

Truthfully if I were closer I'd at least like to see what comes out of there. I wonder how old the mill is and how many years of log build up they've had. Could be very interesting.

Thanks woodhauler, I found it. Looks like fish habitat too me. ::)
The best logs appear to have been cleared out for the parking lot.
I built my own band mill with the help of Forestry Forum.

I used to teach a history class in Springfield,  where we would walk back there, and  I can tell you that there are some big sticks in there....  Unfortunately, I don't believe there are any active mills in Springfield or Eugene that can handle those logs so someone with a swing mill or mobile dimension could do well....
