Poulan Pro 46cc rebuild question
« on: May 12, 2010, 09:25:23 pm »
Hey gang, I was given a Poulan Pro 4620AVL by a co-worker and was told "This POS does not stay running / run right so take it"...

well, sure it's gonna run like crap with no air filter and 50PSI. So I took it apart and the ring was shot, the bore looked salvageable so i cleaned it up a little and ordered a new ring for the piston. I'm keeping this on the cheap since this will be my camp saw....

I AM NOT A PRO... I fix ejection seats as a job...but I did have good luck rebuilding a Husqvarna 55 so I wanted to give this a try.

anyway, I quickly learned not all saw crankcases are the same.....

I have cleaned everything, checked stuff ( as best i know) but i am puzzled as to what to use for the "bottom end" crankcase sealant... it appeared to have some sort of RTV as a sealant from the factory.

All of the standard RTV / gasket makers I have in my garage seem to shy away from "constant immersion in gasoline"   Do they mean as a gas tank repair or would the environment of a chainsaw be bad for it?

so what do I use?

thanks, Jim
Jim

Indian head gasket shellac which is now owned by Permatex works as good as anything .Number 2 Permatex works well .

Some people use Yamaha bond and if you want to be hoity toit use Lok-tite 5900 which is what Ford ,Mercades, and 90 percent of the auto makers use . They all work just fine .BTW a tiny little tube of Lok-tite 5900 cost 14 bucks and a little bottle of Indian head is about 3 .

I've done total teardowns and reconditions on 8 lime green Poulans this past winter, I just use the Permatex Ultra Black, follow instructions, has worked well for me.
fwiw,
