Teenswinger came for a visit today
« on: May 10, 2010, 11:04:33 pm »
...and he brought his sawmill. ;D

I had a pile of logs that had been sitting around a while and finally decided to do something about it.  It was a mixed bag of stuff.  A little each of pine, poplar, white oak, cherry, walnut, and maple.  We got started a little late as it's quite a drive for Jacob.  The saw hit the wood at 9:30 and we finished at 6.  All in all, he sawed and I tailed 1300bf of lumber plus a maple that we slabbed.

80+ Pine and poplar 2x6's 8-10 feet long.  Some day I will decide what to build with them. ::)

A trailer of mixed hardwoods.

You may notice the bright orange paint on the 16" wide walnut.  That is to remind me to dig out the 6 stand wire that was wrapped around the tree many years ago. >:(

Here's a big knarly soft maple.  This has been kicking around my yard for a couple of years.  I was almost ready to bust it up for firewood, but Jacob thought it might be worth sawing.

He was right. ;D

After opening it up, we decided to slab it .  He cut several 3" and 4" pieces.  I decided to leave the bottom third of the log unmilled to use for extra large bowl blanks.

If you're bored, feel free to take a ride on Jacob's slabber... :)

As usual, Jacob did a great job and was a pleasure to work with all day. ;)

While the slabber looks slow, when you work out the bd/ft you are cutting with each slab it works out pretty good.

And you have those big live edge slabs that make great bar or table tops  :)

Metalspinner that's an impressive stack of lumber.  Teenswinger what do you think about it?

Piles of stuff!!! Sawdust, bark, edgings, slabs, wood. UGH!

Over the years, I've developed a little bit of a routine when it comes to these piles.

If I lay out a huge tarp under the sawing area, the sawdust removal is much faster and easier. If I set aside the edgings that will make a 4' sticker then sticker making will go smoothly.  If I stack the slabs and edgings into a tall bundle between fence posts, fire wood cutting goes easier (see second pic).  But all that said, I am still flat out worn out. :(

Oh, there's a new pile this time.  The bottom slab from the swing mill is usually thrown in the fire wood bundle, but this time I set them aside to cut some bowl blanks or maybe a bench or two.

The hard part of stacking all the lumber hasn't even started yet! ::)

Sometimes, I think my life is just piles of stuff. :D

Anyway, I'm preaching to the choir...

WDH,

This pile of logs has been sitting around for about a year.  I needed to take care of it before it went bad.  But, hopefully, I can get Jacob out here this summer to take care of the cherry.  A fork lift rental might be in order for that weekend. :D

fish,
Teenswinger is probably out sawing at this very moment.  He never stops.  :D  I'm sitting here nursing a beer and sore back and he's out busting it again.  Oh, to be young again.

I think he's gonna need to come up with a new handle.  His current one is just a wee bit outdated. ;)

If you don't go broke with the grocery bill before you get the youngsters to teenage, then all you got to do is direct from the picnic table.  Dad's are great at making work. ;D :D

Do you have a slabber with your saw?  The slabber seems slow to me also.
Wonder if you could get a more aggressive chain for it?

Surprisingly I to cut thru the wire in the walnut and it did not even chip the teeth.
The maple did turn out pretty nice.

We really, really need that dictionary up and running sooner- now Magic has gone and used a word wrong, to my thinking: logs can be in a "whack" as in a "whack o' logs," but I've never heard of a "whack o' lumber."  We have to be very careful with our language usage or it could get away from us and the next thing you know, we're all speaking Canadian or Yooper or Yankee.

Magicman's use of the term is totally correct and appropriate usage as determined by the whack rules, and the dictionary has been up and running for quite some time. Its under the forum extras link.  :)
