Sorry for you AOL users
« on: October 19, 2003, 05:07:54 pm »
Due to AOL's unfair exclusion practices, if you are an AOL user, you currently can not recieve mail from our server. AOL bans I.P. addresses in huge blocks and in this case entire networks that may include 10's of thousands of websites.

The reasoning? 2 or 3 of those websites may have been responsible for Spam. In this case most of CIHOST network has been banned. We have tried work arounds that last days at times and then sometimes only minutes.

If you are using AOL I regret you may lose out on forum functions such as newsletters and thread notifications, but the truth is they should be apologizing to you, but dont hold yer breath...

Thanks Jeff,

AOL has been a real pain for the last 3 years. The bad thing for us is our business e-mail is an AOL account >:(. We could loose quite a bit of money by dumping AOL compleatly.

You would think being a customer for 10 years would mean something to them,    no ???they don't care. ::)

Thanks for the notification, Jeff.  Unfortunately, AOL is my first choice for internet access because of reduced account rates in conjunction with my full time employer.

Thanks for the update.

if you have secondary email accounts you wont be affected. DSome people use AOL for connection then have alternate email.

You can use Hotmail and Yahoo mail anywhere, for free. They are massive, so you may have to do some "shopping" to find a user name that isn't already being used

I've had nothing but grief from Yahoo. I signed on to a forum sponsored by Yahoo and started getting spammed heavy, 2 days later. NOW, I get all kinds of porn crap, all attributed to Yahoo selling my e-mail address. If need be, I can track the e-mails, so, I'm sure it was all from Yahoo.
All truth passes through three stages:
   First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; and
Third, it is accepted as self-evident.

yahoo and hotmail were both victims of spammers. They didnt sell the addresses. Spammers were able to find a hole in thier systems where they could send spam and have it appear to be from hotmail and yahoo address's. It's just that they were able to use thier servers to send the mail.

The same thing happened with this server. They found a program they could exploit, submit information to a form and exploit the servers sendmail program. We found the hole and closed it, but a bunch of spam went out that was attributeds to someone that did not send it.

Last I heard microsoft had fixed the hotmail episode.

Must be getting some AOL mail through. We have a new member and he has an AOL address and he got his password cause he was logged on.  Thats what sucks when they filter. He could have tried to register on a day we were not getting around the block and would have never received the password. :-/
