I think that recommendation dates back to ancient days when the detroit was designed, back then there were no multiple grade diesel oils.

I ran into the same problem when I got my TJ with 3-53. There was a whole list of single weight oils recommended to me depending on different temps, atmospheric conditions, and phases of the moon. It's got 15-40 in it now, and that's what I run in all of my trucks and equipment. The local Mobil guy couldn't even get me straight 20.

When I had a 353 the dealer was adamant about straight 40 Delvac, specially designed for those engines. You can also find a lot of info by searching online. Naturally, you can't use 40 wt in the winter, but it will keep you going while you do some more research.

I only use Chevron products my self and in my case use Dello 400 40 wt year round, thankfully don't have to fight the cold temps. most you guys have, it is a good Deisel grade oil, however the true grade for Detroit in the Chevron line is Dello 100 30 wt. Texaco Ursa and Shell Rotella are comprable oils and are ment to slightly sludge. Detroit recommends MIL-L-2104B 30 wt. year round and does not recommend any vis. lower than 30 wt. or multi -viscosity oils, consult with your local oil supplier and he can help you.

I have a warning lit. from Detriot not to use multi-viscosity oil. It goes into why but I can't remember the reason.
I'll try to find it.
Shell recommends straight weight oil.

Delo straight 40  at least in the summer, lower weights for cold weather.
Multi visco oils are not good for em.

the machine im working with now has a 4-53 and the company provides us 10-30.

run any oil that will stay in the motor.

you know a man runs a detroit when he buys 6 cases of oil and one filter.

I've already voiced my opinion on oil so won't go in to that, I have two 353's, they are well maintained and non Eithered motors and do not leal a drop or use a drop in 100 hour cycles.
A leaking engine in not a well maintained engine and chances are your leakers have been started with either cold and you've taken the top edge off compression rings and by using multi- vis are getting eccessive amounts in the airbox, if it's a motter of gaskets leaking fix it, for the cost of a motor you can't be cheap and run any old oil and run what Detroit recomends, overall engine life is what matters.

I don't understand, what exactly is the problem with the multi-vis in a 3-53? I was going to just put 15-40 Rotella in mine, that's what I run in the other rigs. Now I'm not so sure.
I just want to run my mill
