My new Makita dsc510
« on: March 12, 2010, 11:40:03 am »
I have been using Husky 55 for years but it started having problems so I decided to get another chainsaw. Decided for Makita (Dolmar) DSC510. I could really use a bigger chainsaw since I live on 85 acres in NoID, mostly wooded, run a Woodmizer, but can not handle the heavy saws for extended times (63 years old).

The DSC510 runs very smooth and vibrates less than Husky. Two thinks bother me though: 1) it slowly stalls when tipped on a side, and 2) decelerates very slow. Is it something that can be adjusted, or is it a feature of the chainsaw?

Like most new saws, the carb is adjusted very lean in order to placate the environmental folks. Cut the limiter tabs and retune the carb, or take it back to the dealer and ask him to retune the carb if you aren't comfortable doing it.

I got one of those Makita DCS510 from Bailey's recently.  I haven't noticed the deceleration problem.  I haven't used it yet on a standing tree, only been cutting firewood lengths from longer logs I brought home, so I haven't really run it horizontal on its side.
I hope to use it  a bunch this weekend so I'll report back.  I've only run one tank of gas mix through it so far, but I'm pleased with it :)

Ran my 510 a bunch today-  no problem horizontal or any position.  No slow deceleration.
But-
The chain kept binding in the bar...it was almost as if the width would grow as it got hot and bind in the bar groove.
Had a spare Oregon chain, put it on and no more problems.
Can't wait to get home tomorrow and mic the Dolmar chain width and compare it to the Oregon chain width.

It is nice to hear that you are happy with the saw. It is interesting, when I used the saw first time the original chain came off and got messed up. After I installed Oregon chain I had no problem cutting. I will still try to readjust the saw.
