Growing Queensland Kauri
« on: March 07, 2010, 11:36:47 am »
I just came across an ebay listing for 50 Queensland Kauri seeds.

This seems interesting. Can they be grown here in Indiana, or is the climate too different, and are there other reasons why it shouldn't be done?

I think you will find your winters will be too harsh. They dont handle heavy frosts at all well.

We can grow the native Agathis australis, which is closely related, here. But we need to shelter the seedlings from frost in winter. Once they get a bit of height they are above the real cold air and grow make it though the winter. It's native range is the Northern part of NZ where they dont get much frost.

Pity really, they are a pretty awesome tree.
