can you figure up ac. by using a GPS?
« on: October 11, 2003, 12:09:27 pm »
I was wondering if I gave someone here the concordance from a GPS if they could figure how many ac. there are?

Here they are

N38 24.492' WO81 06.086'

N38 25.276'WO8 08.959'

N38 25.487'WO81 05.549

N38 24.404'W81 05.860'

One question;  It looks like your coordinates are in degrees and then minutes, no seconds.  Is that right?  I'll give it a try that way.

With only 3 decimals on the minutes I think you don't have enough precision to get a good estimate.

I think your second West value is out, I assumed 81 degrees but your minute value makes that point 18 miles away from the rest ;D
Give me the right west values and I'll tell you how big the area is.

Hi Rod,
The numbers off your GPS are degrees of Latitude (N)and Longitude(W)  Have a look at a globe or an atlas and you'll see the degrees latitude and longitude on there.

Are you sure about your second value?  The other 3 points line up to make a rectangle about a 1/4 mile wide by 1 1/4 miles but that second point is still many miles away from the other 3.

If you are measuring a field .25 miles by 1.25miles then its 200 acres.

Try plotting your points at www.Topozone.com.  You have the format Degrees/Decimal minutes.  It would help to know what coordinate datum your GPS is using.  It looks like your #2 coordinates are inaccurate.

Here is how I  plotted your points.  Is this in the right neck of the woods?

Rod,

I have a neat GIS program which will calc the acres if you can get coordinates that you are sure of.  I'll also need to know the USGS quad for your location.

Here is the new reading from the GPS that you say might be wrong.

N 38 25.417

W081 06.144

The couny map says 376 ac and the deed says 292 ac

But I don't no how they came up with the numbers on the deed cause and the begining call on the deed there is no numbers of feet to the nexted call which is about  1/4 mile.

I was just wordering which one was the closest to being right

The county map was scaled which made it 376 ac.

Yes the perimeter is 16475.1 feet. I import a text file with the LAT LON and it displays as points. Then I use the draw tool to connect the points. If you want the length of one leg you could just draw it.

A - B    5594
B - C    2873
C - D   6738
D - A   1207

Did the GPS you used to collect the plots have an average function?
