Those sure look good.  I'm curious what do logs of that caliber run?  Do they charge more or less for over size logs?  I've seen some blogs for what mills pay for logs, but local loggers quote me about 200-300% more than what the blogs say mills are paying.  I assume some of it is volume, but mostly i think they may be looking for a sucker.  Are those considered veneer logs or saw logs... No. 1 sawlogs, No. 2?  All butt logs?
I appreciate the info.
Thanks

Scott,

I wish my schedule for the next couple of months wasn’t so crazy.  I would offer to come down to help you saw them up.  Always wanted to see a swinger, swing mill that is, in action for a full day.  But, my work load, both at work and home, is just so CRAZY.  I didn’t even get a chance to go deer hunting this year………….   :( :( :(  Remember to be real careful while handling those big ones.  About 5 years ago we had haft of a big one get away from us and still scars me to this day. :o :o :o

Sorry it's taken so long to chime in.
Scott, and I had a great time Sunday loading and straping those sticks down, it was a good visit.
Reid, that grapple works just fine, yes a few leaks, but that keeps everything greased up. The whole rig works better than
I expected it to when I was putting it together. It has no problem w/ an 8,000# log as long as I can grab holt to it. ;D

Kelvin, I paid 400/1000 for those logs and felt that it was a very fair price.  If not veneer grade, they are #1's.  There are not many local buyers for the big logs; usually the loggers leave them in the woods because of it.

If you have to buy the logs straight from the mill that bought them from the loggers, then you will usually pay around 900/1000.  Basically the mill marks them up 2X.

There are three logs from the same tree; the third of which has some defects up higher (but not many).

Landon, you bet!

Bruce, would love to have you down - anytime.

Very nice logs! We don't see much White Oak like that around here. Here are pictures of some logs I sent out this past weekend.

Two 38 ft. long logs

This log is 17 inches on the tip, 41 ft. long. We also cut 25 ft. off of the butt end.

Bill, nice logs.  Your tractor with FEL in the picture looks just like mine, I like it does a good job for it's size.

Kevin, The price that Scott stated above is what I pay at the log deck. If I picked them up at the mill the price goes way up.
I was going after cypress, but at the time there was no cypress on the deck, so instead of making a 100 mile trip for
for nothing these logs were there, and knowing how scott likes biguns  ;DI brought them home. Two of the logs I could have
done a little chainsaw work and sawed them, but I don't need any w/oak at this time. Scott got the prize. 8)

Wow!
Those kind of logs bring back some fantastic memories. Back in the start of the Lit'l sawmill boom I used to deliver my 10 hp mill with a garuantee that it would (eventually) saw up a 36" (scale end) x 8' log of any species.  Well during those boom years I had orders out a year and a half in advance. That gave my potenial customer a long, frustrating waiting period in which to find the biggest, hardest, knottyest (my own word) log in North America (so I thought at the time).
My favorite memory (if I can remember) of this was on Grindstone Island in the St lawrence Seaway.

They loaded me, my truck and mill on to a barge and headed for the Island.
There had been no mills on the Island for many years and the red oak was absolutely huge and prime.  I saw the logs they had waiting for me and though they were large they were not out of my range (plus they were fresh from a recent Microburst that hit the Island) so no problem.
Then my potenial new owners informed that the neighbor farm was skidding in the log they wanted me to demonstrate the mill on.

As the 36" (scale end) x9' red oak log was brought up to the mill, the neighboring farmer bringing in the skid said to me, " If That Mill saws this log" I'll buy one too!
As I was finishing the last few cuts, the neighbor farmer started to explain to me that he was a little strapped for cash because of the new John Deere and all........

I was so thankful just to have been able to dice that baby up!  (even though it was almost dark when I got done)  Nice Logs !

Scott, you got them things unloaded yet?

Ivey, it rained all day yesterday, so I spent the day on "dry" projects!  I'm headed out in a few minutes to unload them.
