new Stihl 066 vs MS 660M?
« on: October 08, 2003, 12:34:26 pm »
Any pros/cons to the older 066 vs new MS 660M. Will buy one found a new 066. Dealer said that the emissions on the 066 may not be as "tight".

Any help appreciated

Side chain tension and clear fuel tanks on the new models are nice.
Decompression on the new saws make them easy to pull.
Can't think of anything else off hand.

Krowbar, I purchased a new MS 660 with 28 inch bar last month.  I am very pleased with the saw.  I have been bucking 18 - 32 inch oak stems.  The saw cuts like a dream.  However, the oiler needs to be turned up all the way.  I don't think you can go wrong with this saw.

By the way, if you plan on sleeping with the saw (as I have found comforting), you should train your spouse/significant other not to roll around too much.  Those blades are a bear.   ;D

Thanks for the info folks. I bought the 066. It was a 2002 mod. 28" bar. Slings plenty of oil. Great saw.

That's a nice saw, what have you got lined up for it?

Taking down and bucking about 30 oak, hickory and maple. A few around 25-30". Got the extra HP to do some light milling down the road when I get around to building a log barn.

Have an 036 Pro for limbing and general cutting.

This is an awesome site. BTW.

the First thing I would do is get the muffler opened up on that.  either buy the one right from stihl, it is the dual port muffler, I have the parts number if you need it, or do the job yourself.  Buying the part might keep it under warranty better than doing it yourself.   I did both, and either seemed to work just fine.  I don't buy new saws though.

John,

Yes the part # would be great. Do you also know of a case that will hold the 066. Stihl's goes up to a 460.

Thanks in advance.

KROWBAR the new ms660 are comming out with a one screw adjustment carb I don't like them the older 066 has the full adjustment carb you are much better off with it.

The number should be 1122 140 0603 if my record is correct.  That is the dual port muffler from stihl for the 066.  My home made one works just as well, but it sure aint as pretty.  I need to get out the brazing torch and touch it up a bit.  It is about $67

I agree with that you can't over tighten them. To many times the guys that work for me tighten the cap to tight and then strip the slot in the cap trying to loosen it.

Does that dual port muffler make a big difference? How does it sound?

Kevin I looked at a 066 today and it has compression release and side tensioner. I think the caps were the new style too. I think this one has been on the shelf for about a year so it must be in between the older style and the MS660.
