Synthetic oil for pre-mix
« on: February 15, 2010, 04:25:04 pm »
Has any one tried Pro-Mix synthetic oil for their premix? They claim that 2.6 oz/gal (40:1) will satisfy oil requirements for any engine. There is no agency certifictaion or manufacturers approval on the label.

Not familiar with that brand, but I've been using synthetic mix oil for several years and will never go back.

Seems odd that a synthetic oil is saying to run 40:1 mix. Don't most of them claim they'll work at significantly higher ratios than the "standard" 50:1?

Why would you want to run a non rated oil?

I run JASO FC/FD oil in my 2-stroke saws and blowers. Elf 100% synthetic at 50:1. No smoke, and they run a lot better.
I ship Stihl saws down under and to north Europe... message me for details.

I would be real leary of a synthetic oil that wants you to run 40:1.  Petroleum even has a higher recommendation than that.  It should be at least 50:1.  I have run synthetic for many years at everything from 100:1 to 50:1 and will never go back to petroleum.

40:1 is not that bad. Certain tests have shown that you get better ring seal and compression (and power) from having  more oil in the premix (any type of oil, dyno or synthetic, or blend). Personally I would never run a 100:1 oil... too thin. I tend to err toward 45:1 when I mix my oil and gas.

I run my 100% synthetic at 32:1 and it has recommendations starting at 16:1. So does that make it a bad oil or brand, not.  :D :D

My point is that I would never run oil at 100:1... not that 100:1 is bad stuff. Its spendy though.

Seems like a waste to run 100:1 oil at 32:1. There are lots of top quality 50:1 oils out there, and rated as such. I use Elf 100% synthetic. Rated JASO FC/FD. I know what it tests at. It runs great in my saws. It is reasonably cheap and available at most motrocycle shops. Its way better than the vast majority of the non rated premix oils out there, and way better for a saw than any of the TWC outboard oil (or oils that claim to run in both chainsaws and outboard motors). I would still be using Mobil 1 synthetic if it was still sold in the US. But it is not... and it was clear. Elf has a blue dye in it, so I know for sure if my premix is premix, and not straight gas.

I run Amsoil Sabre synthetic at 2 Oz per gal. (64:1) At 100:1 I can't tell if it's mixed or straight gas. My Amsoil dealer insists I will foul a plug at 50:1. I fouled a plug  in on the 3rd tank of gas. I just don't know. Although, I ain't used to it cause it's a new saw,  and it seems to flood real easy. I pulled on it so many times today I was sure the ignition module was bad. I got it going after about 80 pulls. Again, it might be the " too rich 64:1 ratio".

Some major manufacturer's oil (Stihl for example) meet JASO FC with their "lesser" grade mix oil, and their synthetic is not rated because they did not spend the money to do so.

We run all of our 2 strokes on synthetic at 40:1.  Still running Mobil Racing 2T, just a few bottles left...going to have to pick a new oil soon.

Cappy, does your Mobil 2T have the dye in it? Years ago I ordered a case of it, no dye so I mixed it with Stihl dyed oil.Could not use undyed mix, firefighters would be in a dither, its tough enough to get them to put the right fuel in when they can see it.I think you can still get it from Windward Petrolium in New Hampshire.Frank C.
