372xp has no spark
« on: February 11, 2010, 11:03:31 pm »
Howdy all,
Figured I would try you guys before I go ripping the saw apart...
I have an older 372 that I usually leave at the landing because I hate lugging it through the snow all day and it's constantly rattling off some bolt or screw.
But today was warm and sunny (28F) so I decided to take it out, it ran great through about 4 tanks, then right after filling up tank number 5 it ran for a minute and died. Back at the landing I found it had no spark (not the plug, I checked) and quickly swapped to another saw to keep moving...any ideas where to even start with this issue? I can build motors and carbs but I hate electrical work...any advice from all you 372 savvy folks would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Just install a  new ignition module.    Either the module or the spark plug wire has failed.   In most cases, they are one unit so you just take out the bad unit and install the new unit.    Gap between the coil and the flywheel should be the thickness of a business card.

I was switching coils in one of my 365 - 372 saws because of it being blue = Blue coil rev limited, Black coil unlimited.   You just unscrew the plug wire if it is just the plug wire. Also check and make sure you plug wire cap didnt come unscrewed, it also unscrews.  Matter fact make sure both ends are still screwed in and making contact.
I have a good blue one laying on shelf with no wire or cap.

Thanks everyone, I ended up tracing wires and then finally swapping ignition modules with my 362 which worked, so looks like a will be getting a new module. I hadn't known that about the blue rev-limited coil, I had black, non-limited coils in both saws so I'll be looking for another one of those. The business card gap thickness was helpful information as well.
