Rip chain sharpening.
« on: October 06, 2003, 12:03:45 pm »
Howdy, I have Stihl 066 Magnum and an Alaskan 36" chainsaw mill that i use to cut boards with. I'm having a hard time keeping the chain sharp. I use an electric sharpener from Granberg and i do use Cool grind. I follow the directions from Granberg to sharpen it, but i wonder if i'm doing it right. I also wonder if i haven't damaged the temper of the cutters. Not sure how to tell if i have. Any feedback would be appreciated.

I was never able to keep the Granberg chain sharp and I only ever used a file. I don’t know if the chain is just junk or if it was damaged during the re-grinding before it we shipped. I prefer standard chain filed to 10° for softwood.

If your electric sharpener is on of those rotary tool things with the diamond burr then I would suggest using a real, honest-to-goodness, brand-new-out-of-the-box, chain file.

I have tried thos rotary tools to sharpen chain and have never gotten good results.  Now, that may mean that I don't know how to use them, but, it seems that a file always works. :)

 Appreciate the feedback. I cut mostly hardwoods and the electric sharpener uses a stone to do the sharpening. Where can i find a ripping chain from Oregon or Stihl?

Do you have either dealer close by?
The top plate on the Stihl chain will cut a little on the rough side but I have had good luck with both.

Kevin,
Could you elaborate a bit here?
 "The top plate on the Stihl chain will cut a little on the rough side. . . "

Thanks Gus

Gus ;
The top plate on the Stihl chain is 30o and the Oregon chain is 10o.
