What causes seams ?
«

I always thought that long seams were a sign of earlier injury to the tree but now
I'm not sure. (I'm no forester)
Today I came across an area with a mixture of red and sugar maples that were
6" to 12" dbh and almost every one of them had a seam running from the
ground all the way up to the first major branch.
What could have caused this??

Could the area been opened up and the trees were sun burned? Fire?

lightning, frost cracks, fork up high that has split lower, many reasons.
