Sealed Maytag Oil Bottle
« on: January 26, 2010, 04:15:59 pm »
Here is a pretty rare collectible. Ifyou are in to old engines, or go to any of the old Iron shows, you may know what this is.  You may have seen an empty before, but chances are you never saw a full bottle with its original seal.  This is the first of probably many collectibles I will have for sale. I'll try here first before I go to Ebay.  I am asking $135 for this. You won't find another very easily.

Edison Oil Bottle

I also have for sale this full edison oil bottle. This was the oil that was used to keep the water from evaporating out of theold edison wet cells like they used at railroad crossings.  I want $25 for this, plus shipping.

Jeff,

Have you seen that new show on the History channel called "Pickers"? That one guy with the beard is into cans and bottles. Seems like a fetish almost. You outta email him with pics and see if he's interested. Their business name is Antique Archeology.

Cool stuff.

I've seen a couple of their shows and each time have said to my wife that they are preying on "Old Folks."
I'd say the Pickers are a couple of Turkeys.  They even brag about their profit on each steal/buy.

Not in the same class as Jeff. ;)

Of course not in the same class as Jeff ... although emails are cheap and you never know what may come of it. Not to mention one never has to "accept" an offer.

As to preying on old folks ... I can see how one could get that idea. It's a conversation my wife and I have had regarding the show. "Elder Abuse" is prevalent today and is a topic that deserves substantial attention. Some of those "old folks" are pretty sharp though - sharper in fact than the "pickers". The ones that have warehouses full of stuff and dicker back and forth with a grin - they can hold their own and are clearly aware of the "dance" taking place. The little old granny who's door they may cold call on and ask if they can "look around" in her garage - maybe not so much. I can just see her kids wondering where "something" that they had sentimental attachemnts to has gone. "Oh I sold that to two men on a television show for $5.00. They were so charming ...."  ::)

Jeff can hold his own though.   ;)

Regardless,  I don't like the two "Pickers" and hope they are not successful no matter how you package it. ::)

My selling price would leave them no room for the type of profit they are accustomed to.  :)  I actually like that show and I think that on the average, they pay more for stuff then I ever would. At least the stuff they televise.

I like the show simply because my favorite past time is digging through old/abandoned barns, houses, sheds or what ever. Jeff, I know a couple of guys that may be interested in the Maytag oil. Give me a couple of days to get ahold of them.

I saw that show the other night.  That one older fella really put it to them, I thought.  First he wouldn't sell them anything, then got them to pay double what they should have on the "junk."    I had the same thoughts as you guys on the little old lady.  The few items they televised didn't seem that it would make or break her, but she seemed pretty gullable.  I hope she has children that would take care of her.
I do what the little voices in my wife's head tell me to do.

I'm with Mooseherder.
I saw the show a couple times, and my first impression (and last) was they were simply stealing from people who had no idea what the value of their pieces were, but at the same time...the thieves knew. Now, granted, maybe some of them did know. However, there are many shows on that show people as dumb and stupid. Must make for good TV ratings.

Much more tolerable if these guys would pick through and just take a respectable commission on the items they re-sold.

Worst of all, if I recall, it was a show on the History Channel.  ::) ::) ::)

Jeff,

Getting back to the Maytag Multi-Motor Oil, have you been in touch with the Maytag Collector's Club?

http://www.maytagclub.com/

The President of the club is Leonard Walburn, Humansville, MO. (Google this for his phone number.)

Wooho! I found out how to have the Adobe Reader X toolbar displayed when I open a .PDF.

There is no need to say 'unleaded regular gas'. It's all unleaded. Just say 'regular gas'. It's not the 70s anymore. (At least that's what my wife tells me.)

Jeff, I talked to the two ol boys I thought might be interested in the oil. One was laid off and sold all his maytag stuff to the second guy to make ends meet. The second guy is interested but doesn't really want to buy anything else right now after buying the first guy's collection. I'll keep working on him though.
