Today was a nice day to get the cobwebs off the snow shoes and do something different after pushing snow

The trail going up to the bush , really nice with all the new snow cliing to the branches.

These two hemoroids make snowshoing a little diffecult at times ...

They are sitting/standing/walking on the ends of the snowshoe

Once in a while ya can get them to fetch a stick and break the trail , but seams like it gets old for them real quick , and they manuver back to the broken trail by you know who ...

These are the snowshoes I use , these have some history behind them , they have walked to the North Pole from Ward hunt island.

My girls where waiting when we got back . Some may remember the colt we had about 18 month ago .. well she grew some .

Marcel, is that an old logging trail you shoe on. Out behind my cousin's place, whom lives 30 miles from here, there is a nice old logging road from the 60's that one of the neighbors keeps open by cutting the windfall out. He has also built other trails on timber company land. He hunts and traps out there and has a camp. Anyway, sure is nice trail he keeps open. When visiting with my uncle a couple times before Christmas I would walk those old trails and roads for half a day. Seemed like 6 or 8 miles way back around there. Was a full morning walk. Did it every day. We haven't a whole lot of snow here, it's settled a lot over Christmas. Been so mild, it's crusty here. Can't wait to get out on the snow sled and bust trail.

You don't look to have a whole lot of snow yet, still can see fence and goldenrod/weeds.

Nice horses. I can understand about the dogs getting in the trail breakers way.

They ain't stupid, and sometimes they get little snacks, they (each one) just want to be the first to get'm.

I haven't had the snow shoes out for a few years there has not been enough snow to bother may be this year.
Nice pics by the way, and who was wearing those shoes when they went to the pole?

I prefer X-country skis, waxable and metal edges. That looks like some nice fluffy snow, I am jealous. The animals are beautiful.

Marcel, my winter looks like yours, only with more snow and steeper slopes.

I use traditional Algonquin snowshoes, Barb likes the 4' long Alaskan ones.

Our Norwegian Elkhound insists on being out front. Unfortunately for us, his idea of breaking trail in deep snow is to leap ahead. That means alternating patches of deep unbroken snow and a big hole. That's the reason for the traditional snowshoes

Bruce , I have a set of traditional snow shoes also, but , these are so much lighter and easier to manoeuver around trees and they dont get wet and heavy .

It would also mean for me to have too dead beat labs on each one .

Yes it is an old logging trail that I have somewhat restored it looks closed in , but it really is not , those limbs where just a little overloaded with ice and snoe , once you hit them with the ski pole , they get out of the way

SD, we have close to two feet so far it is ggod enough for me , just right for shoing

Fish , yes , they are a mix of lab and golden retreiver. In the litter there where two Chocolats , two black and two yellars and a black and white

I took the two chocolats , male/female
WDH , this is only early January , it will get deeper , but usualy gets to about three feet then comes down , and ocilates between two to three feet . Tom, what could we northerners do with out your help

Pretty wet and sloppy most of the month of February actually. Last 4 or 5 days the snow has been melting around the clock. Here is the snow in the middle of my woods today. I was out doing some measuring and the woods is wet from the ground up to 30 feet over my head with the needles holding lots of wet stuff from last night. I was a little wet from that walk to say the least.

A pack of coyotes (3 of'm from what I could tell) musta been at a meet and greet this morning in the adjacent field. They barked and howled for 5 minutes, then they all shut up and not another peep. I kept an eye out for'm but nay a coyote in sight.

Did see some fresh otter tracks on the way back to the car, headed to the beaver pond.

The first day of spring, and I've got another pretty face to add to the pictures. This colt was given to me by the handsome fella standing behind him. The colt's Mama was taken as a wet mare for a very important Thoroughbred. He's half thoroughbred, half paint. Isn't he gorgeous!

First name that came to mind for me was "Blaze" because of the blaze between his eyes and the likelyhood that he'll be fast with the thoroughbred blood in him. Very handsome colt.

We have a guy about 15 miles from us that raises World Champion paints. It is fun to go by in the spring when all the babies are out frolicking.

His Daddy is a 15 1/2 hand buckskin paint. Judging by the joint size of his knees, we think he's gonna be a good size. He has a really great disposition. We put the halter on him, and snapped on a lead, and he walked with us like he'd been doing it all his life.

I plan to just enjoy him, although the grandkids might be thinking barrells someday. Cowboy Bob enjoys team penning, but we found out the hard way that a good cutting horse ain't necessarily a plus around dairy cows. He had a mare he called Mama and she was so dedicated to cutting cows, she'd run our heifers through the fence every chance she got. Yes siree, ol Mama enjoyed bossing those cows, with or without our help.

Great looking colt you have there Roxie,we recently had to sell our cutting horse because he started just running the steer over like he had a grudge or something, but he made someone a great trail horse... does anyone in your area use buffalo to train cutting horses? it's getting to be a popular thing over here.

We had a cutting horse show up at our farm once that loved to boss around the cows. The neighbor brought over his bull for services and cured the horse of that habit real fast.

My brother's favorite horse growing up was named Whiskey! On a sad note my dad sold him and my brother was devastated....too bad we couldn't of sold him instead.

Great pics!!

We're up to about 429" of snowfall this season with a 79" base at 10,200'.
So, it's about average, maybe a little low overall.

Here's a pic of clearing snow around our cabin with a 2003 BR2000 snowcat.

! I don't think the roof would quite hold the cat (18,000lbs). That was just my feeble attempt at clearing the roof, before hiring a snow-removal crew. What you see in the vertical opening on the roof is a ladder I have attached to the ridge. There is about 3-4' of standing snow on the roof.

But the cat is about 7-8' above the ground in that picture. hehe.

Stonebrooke - we're designed for 160lbs/sq-ft.
1/2 way through construction, the engineer made us replace some of the horizontal wood logs in our post & beam roof support structure with steel. When I visit the south, or Ohio I can't believe how simple/inexpensive the roof structures are!

That must be because you have that nice dry snow. Places in the Adirondacks have a 200lb snowload. Down south it is zero . That is why the chicken houses fall down when they get a little snow.

Our engineer says it will hold over 200lb/sqft, but it is only submitted for 160 on the plans.

While our snow falls light & dry, the strong sun and fast melt-freeze cycle consolidates our layers quckly increasing the per sq/ft loading beyond say mid-west snowpack. Our top layer (1-4') can be fluffy, but below it is a solid, heavy pain-in-the-you-know-what to shovel base.

Here are a few pictures of our snow from 2008 Winter where we got literally 1000" of snowfall.
I measured 14' of standing base. Our neighbor's A-Frame picture is the best.
