Beginning Timber Framing workshop in the Illinois.

 Greetings, Just found out about the forum a couple of days ago from Jim Rogers. The forum is great and i want to thank Jim for letting me know about it. Jim is a great resource for this timber framing forum. The workshop is being held Monday
October 20th through Sunday October 26th at W.H. Sommer
Park in Peoria, Illinois. The class is being taught by Rick Collins owner of Trillium Dell TimberWorks. Rick is very involved with the Timber Frame Guild and one of the true leaders in the revival of timber framing in the midwest. You can check out his website trilliumdell.com.  I just wanted to mention that the cost of the workshop is 175
dollars. That's a pretty good deal considering most timber frame workshops start at about 500 dollars and if you live in the midwest you will have to travel a long way to attend them.

This must be the guy that everyone at church was telling me about.   A couple of weeks ago, he Sunday Peoria paper had an article about timber framing.
They are just down I-74 west of us at exit 51 in Knoxville, IL.
Interestingly enough,  at that same exit, there is an old timber frame barn owned by Ted and Janice King.   You can see the barn from I-74.  Several years ago, the public television station out of Nebraska,  (I think it was Lincoln)
produced a show about the restoration of old barns.   The show was named "Barn Again"  The barn at Knoxville was featured in that show.
Also, if I am not mistaken,  the Ertl toy factory out of Dyersville, Iowa made a scale model
of the barn in Knoxville as well.
I think that I will have
to take a drive this weekend and check this place out.
Maybe Becky and I can ride over there on the iron ponies.

The barn you are talking about is at Walnut Grove Farm near Knoxville. You can see it on the web at http://www.walnutgrovefarm.com
It is a big and beautiful barn. Nicely restored and a good example of adaptive reuse. I believe that the folks from Trillium Dell Timberworks are going to doing a timber framing demonstration at Walnut Grove Farm this weekend. You can check the trilliumdell or walnutgrovefarm websites for details.

If $175 is a good deal then the "Jim Rogers" Beginners workshop for free must be a really good deal.  I just read it in the Services topic.

 You can't beat free! That's awesome! Although as you know free is relative. It's about 1,160 miles and an 18 hour drive from
where i live (Moline, Illinois) to Georgetown, Mass. I would need a place to sleep, eat, etc.,time+$$$...Having said all that i might try to figure out a way to get out there. I am not surprised that Jim Rodgers would be doing this. He seems like a great guy. He is generous with sharing his experience and information about timber timber framing. A real timber framing ambassador. This really helps rookies like me. I am very happy with the 2 chisels i just bought from him too. Thanks for directing me to the service section. This place is full of good stuff.

 Bad News! At least from my perspective. The timber framing workshop in Illinois has been canceled due to insufficient registration and concerns about being able to get the materials ready on time. Michael Brown said they are still want to do this and he is planning to do the workshop next spring. At least there will be more time to get the word out and people will have more time to work it into their schedules. I also told Michael about this good ole website and forum.
