Shelby, you  bring up a good point a fella should build at least two mills.Use the first for a wile then build anouther doing what you wish you'd done on the first. Frank C.

Yep that's me, My youtube address is Hilltop366 also.

Nice looking rig shelbycharger. Is your track all metal? Or angle on top of wood beams?  I am wanting to "mill up" myself, and am rich on wood/steel poor. Was thinking of building framework of timbers, a la d school circle mill, and build either a cantilever head rig, or 4 post, to bolt my saw into for now and maybe upgrade to band later on when I have the $$. I like the uncluttered work area of the cantilever design.

I would avoid the cantilever for several reasons, a two track will be easier to build, easier to push (the way mine is built, not sure about others), easier to remove saw head and put in shed when not in use, less stress on frame and saw head, there is quite a bit more sideways push or pull depending on which way you are cutting with a csm than a band mill, also the higher up you go on the cut the more it is multiplied on the track and rollers with a single rail causing it to be more susceptible to shaking while cutting.

my 4 post shakes anything that is sitting on the motor plate off, as is anything that isnt bolted down sitting anywhere on the frame.  I had a pair of safety glasses once that was sitting on the motor plate.. the motor was idling, i fired it up, glasses fell off into the sawdust, i triped on them a few days later.

bandmiller... by the time i build the "big mill" in addition to the bellsaw,  im also building a gang saw,  and i also have 2 arbors and 5 buzz saw blades, altho one is an agressive hook, im thinking it was for a saw mill, but its only 17 in dia i think

I built this all-steel portable back in the '70s when I decided I needed a house and was too 'cheap' to go the mortgage route.  :)

Hello all,
I put together a Belsaw this past summer, fall, and part of this winter, well pretty much over the last year. Like said earlier, these things are never done  :) I extended the carriage out to 20' with 4 dogs and can still add another 5' feet without too much trouble other than I'm out of wheels unless I make or buy more of them. I added hydraulic feed to the mill that is powered from the pump that was on the engine. The valve body I used isn't really good for regulating flow so a flow control was added to allow for fast or crawling speeds. The engine originally came out of a grain combine that was just going to be turned into scrap iron so it came with a governor, belt drive with a 3:1 reduction, and a hydraulic pump.  8) I am currently using the mill to cut logs into a D logs for a log cabin. I have added a log deck set on posts sloped slightly towards the mill (1.5" in 15') and a roller outfeed table and pallets with bunks for slab/firewood handling. Now I am just in need of sawdust removal. I have a sawdust blower but I don't want to pull any more power off of the engine and I don't have electricity to the mill yet. So it is just a scoop shovel for now.  :D I would like to put a shed over the mill and electricity and maybe an attached woodshop someday  ;)

It's a 36 inch blade. It was all I could find when I went looking for a used one in my area.  :)

I use a 289 cu. in. Ford running 2nd gear at about 3000 rpm.

Shelbycharger 400,
No pictures yet. The mill is about 4 hours away and I'm only up there on weekends but I'll see what I can do this weekend when I'm not sawing and its still daylight  ;)

Hi All, first post for me I think?

I am building one...and it is quite unorthodox.
Is this site Ok with letting folks look at my webiste?
I am not commercial, just an old guy, who builds things, and can make a website.

I added my site link into my profile here.
The site has alot of things I either have built or am currently working on.

I can add a link out here in the open if Ok, or you can go thru my profile.

Thank You...

ps. this site looks like there is more 'activity' than where I have been hangin' out?

I am open to any comments. You can email me too if you want to.
