Turn North at Toad Suck

Just looking at the roadmap.  For me to get to Arkansawyer's place, first I would have to turn North at Toad Suck.... :o

it looks like you got the zippers down the side of the road like we have on some of the roads around here. i did not realize i drove on the shoulder so much until they put them in. it makes you pay attention more unless you are like some people that ride on the center line. ;D

They put those zippers down the middle of our highway this summer.  Claim is that it prevents a lot of the accidents where folks doze off and cross the center line.  I believe it.

That black stuff is the road.  Asphault.  Toads sucked away the rest of it.

Yep! Toad Suck is just 2 hours south of me.  Great place to catfish on the Arkansas River.  Turn north and come on up.

Yes, and the pie is most tasty.

Speaking of fishing, I loaded the bait tank with toads shad today and I’m off after the biguns tomorrow.  Weather is far to good to spend the day workin.

I tend to be suspicious of anybody that makes fun of Toad Suck...they may be a yankee...or even worse a revenuer. :D ;D :D

Toad Suck was a shoals on the Arkansas River and the barge hands and tug boat guys would go up on the bank and drink shine till they were blowed up and drunk.  Now there is a lock and dam there and a State Park.  But when the hands were asked what they were doing they would reply "Sucking toads".  Thus the name Toad Suck.

If you stop by the Chamber of Commerce in nearby Conway you can get yourself a t-shirt! :) I got one as a gift while visiting for work a few years back. There's an annual celebration called Toad Suck Daze.

I just want to know how Toad Suck got it's name!!!

Or maybe I don't...  :-X

I think I'll have to leave time in the itinerary next year to take photos of funny place names.

Mind you, near me we have Mudgeeraba, Moorooka, Tingalpa and Tarragindi etc...

Here's a link to the aussie Post Code (zip code) file: http://www1.auspost.com.au/postcodes/
You can see some of the fun names yourself: Pigeon Hole, Frogs Hollow and Dog Rocks just to name a few

Of course, there are also some Aboriginal names which are 'fun' to pronounce: NGAANYATJARRA-GILES, THANGKENHARENGE, YALLA-Y-POORA and WOOLLOOMOOLOO for example.

I loved it when my cousins were here from the USA and tried to pronounce the names, boy that was fun!

Asy, I stayed in a hotel in Wooloomooloo when I was there in April, 1969.  The locals in Sydney pronounced it, "Wullamaloo."  It was a lot more peaceful than areas like King's Cross in that era, and peaceful was what I was looking for.  I had had about all the excitement I wanted for a while. ::) :D

Your Country is beautiful and magnificent, and I enjoyed seeing a little bit of it. ;)

Lee: oops!  went back and read, thanks   :-[
