Bracing the tracks and playing with the CSM
« on: December 13, 2009, 08:32:21 pm »
Howdy group
After I was finished with my mill's bed I found out the inverted angle iron I used for the tracks wasn't strong enough. The cross members on the bed are 3 1/2 feet apart and the track was bending down under the weight of the carriage.  Not only that, I bent one track with the very first log I loaded on it. Today my friend and I welded in some inch and a half tubing under the tracks to brace them. We cut up a cedar and measured the boards in 4 places and they are the exact same thickness from one end to the other.  If the weather is nice enough this coming weekend I plan on cutting up some cherry logs I was given last weekend. The photo below is my friend Chuck cutting up the cedar.

Well done TJB.  I look forward to seeing the Cherry.

I built my own band mill with the help of Forestry Forum.

The track is 14ft, it will handle a 10 ft long log up to 22 inchs the way I have it set up with the saw on the same side as the handle that adjusts the height. I can put the saw on the other side away from the handle and get a 30 inch log on it.  Later on I want to build a longer bed on the ground and use the carriage to square up some logs for a cabin.
