Heating season quarter point?
« on: December 12, 2009, 02:38:07 pm »
Old timers have alway said that winter and the heating season was half over on January 31.  I know from my heating that is about right.

Anybody know when the heating season quarter point is?

I hope it is about now.  I have used better then 20 percent of my wood and approaching the quarter point of my wood.

Stumper if my woodpile is getting low, a good method I find to extend it is to subtly suggest my wife have a holiday and spend some quality time with her mother. ;)  A barrow of split wood will usually last 3 days as opposed to 1. The problem is, nowdays I supply my inlaws their firewood. :(

Thanks, but I would not suffer an enemy to spend any time with my in laws, let alone ask it of a woman I love.

I have back up wood, but it is not as dry as I would like.  I have an extra cord that the trees were cut 8 month ago but only cut and split 2 months ago and stored outside under a tarp.  I also have the best part of a cord of recently cut standing dead cherry and maple.  Most of the standing dead is dry enough so that it would not sizzle if I burnt in now, and will season enough this winter to burn in the the spring (it would season in less then a month if it were summer).

With any luck next year I'll have a wood shed next to the boiler with 9 seasoned cords in it, plus the 6 cord in my existing shed.  This year I poured a shared slab for the boiler and shed.  The shed roof will over hang the boiler so I will no even get wet filling the boiler in the snow and rain 8).
