"Purty" Cherry.....Finished the job
« on: December 11, 2009, 10:36:10 pm »
I'm working a fairly large cherry job, and found a treasure.  Nine 36' to 50' logs from 17" to 28" big end.
I'm cutting them into 8's, 10's, and a couple of 12's.

There is some "purdy" lumber in them !!!

I love opening a log up and finding out what's inside..... :)

That would be me jumping for joy! :)

Was this figure in just one log, or several?  Full length of log?

nice stuff!!!  your sling probably lets you set the log on your saw gently
i just log and use my tractor bucket to pile pulp and logs on the yard. I stole an idea from my uncle and added forks made out of big truck spring leaves bolted to the bucket to make easier picking things up  just a thought
some of that cherry reminds me of the wood in a rolltop desk we have from Ohio

James, all of the 1" will be used for wall paneling.  I'm cutting 2X12 & 3X12's for tables.  There will be a 6X12-8' for a fireplace mantel.  I'm looking for a "non-figured" log for the mantel.  That stuff is too pretty not to open up.... :)

I imagine that those logs are 100 to 150 years old.  The wood is too dense to try to count rings.

Yes, I've used "end tongs" for years to handle logs.  No swinging around, and you have 100% control of the logs.  Just drape the chain across the bucket, and keep the chain short enough so that the upward pressure also applies inward pressure.

Here's a link to my previous thread on end tongs.  (I've never done a link before, so I hope it works.)  Also here's another picture of this job.

Not just one log...the whole tree, and several of them.  It's going to be close to 1K BF of "Purty" Cherry, and well over 2K BF of just regular old stuff...... $$$ :)

What nice stuff!
I see your Lombardini in the background snorting in anticipation of sawing them.
I have a lot of Cherry in my 65 acre woodlot here but never had any that i sawed with figure like that.
By the way the cherry market here sucks right now, but Sugar maple has come back somewhat.
decided to sell my ash as the Emerald Ash borer is only about 100 miles away now.

We have no market for our Cherry.  Not enough of it, and it's generally small and poor quality.  This Cherry was salvaged after a logging operation.  The logger said that it was not worth him hauling it to the mill.

Those cherries definitely look forest grown.  Down here, it would be a real find to come across that many nice cherry logs at one time.

The pics of those logs promote jealousy  :).

Magic: those are incredible!  If I knew where you were, I'd grab Radar and we'd do some midnight logging...  That's the most beautiful cherry I've ever seen and certainly I've never cut any like that.  Next time this logger doesn't want to haul anything like these logs to the mill, I'll be glad to help him out.

Been raining like crazy here all day- at one point it was coming down so hard you couldn't see ten feet... so I just sat in front of the fire place most of the day and worked on paperwork and rebuilding a computer system for my grandson- he's into linux right now so we loaded Ubuntu on- nice OS and seems very stable and usable, and best of all, it's free (unlike those logs you got)

:D  Yup, we offered to do the sawing for an even trade on that JD 5325 4WD.  The customer indicated that he felt that the "green" tractor was worth a bit more.  Dumb cluck.....just doesn't recognize the value of quality sawing.

Here's what my tractor looks like..... :)

We finished sawing that cherry job today.  I had predicted 3K BF, but due to two split and two hollow logs, I got 2609 BF.  It still was a good job, and "bestest" of all, my Son helped with the entire job.   Just don't get any better than that.  The proceedes from this job will pay for the Cherrybark Red Oaks that we will plant next month.

We stacked it.  I do whatever the customer wants.  May take a little extra time, but a satisfied customer is a repeat customer.  This was a "first time" customer, and when he drove up and saw his lumber, he was very satisfied...... 8)

Before we left, he was talking about cutting some Poplar trees to panel other rooms..... ;D

Yup,  I'm exicited about sawing that really big cherry, but I can't get the mill to it until it dries out.  I didn't measure it, but I did see it standing before it was cut down.  It's going to be close if not over 30".  I talked to my forester about it, and he said that it could be maybe 300 years old.  We estimated that some of the ones on that last job were 100-150 years old....

Nice job Magicman. I like sawing cherry. The only species I've sawn more of is white pine.

WDH, you like wide boards, eh? I sawed up a few logs for a tree guy last month. He wanted all flitch sawn, but the walnut wouldn't fit through the mill that way. :)

How many times have we had when we only needed 1-2 inches more?  But, I guess if they made the mill a "couple" of inches wider, we would want/need more...... :D

BTW, Nice Walnut !!!

Chris, the tree guy, likes to get as much flitch sawn as he can for his furniture projects. Like you say, if the mill was a couple of inches wider, then we would just find bigger logs. :D Those walnuts are 22 to 24" wide. Unfortunately, the boards that have two live edges are almost all sap. We don't get many walnuts around here, and these were my first.

There's a logger operating in our area now!  It's on a neighbors property!
There are a few Cherry up in the back end of the property that are exceptional!
The loggers told me there isn't much of a market for cherry in this area!  We'll see!
I've already told the neighbor that I might be interested if the loggers don't take them!
One in particular is about 40-50 feet before the first limb and about 28"dbh!

One in particular is about 40-50 feet before the first limb and about 28"dbh!

no market for Cherry in upstate NY!!!! If the landowner swallows that there is a bridge in Brooklyn I like to sell him

MM,
What size chain are you using there and where should I look to get suitable tongs?  The only cherry I have milled so far was from my 93 year old mother's back yard.  At that time all I had was a Granberg CSM with an Stihl 066, now I am up to an LT-15.  Thanks for the great posts.

Note to WDH, get some cherry of your own and you won't have to spend money on counseling.  ;) ;D

Hey, Magicman, have you considered sawing some of the larger cherry for gunstock blanks?  I make muzzel loaders from time to time, its been a while since I have had time to make one.  I have never worked with cherry, but it is used for gun stocks.  I have seen some very nice rifles stocked in cherry.  And figured wood is desirable for stocks.  From the sounds of it the 300 yr old trees that you have access to would be dense enough for stocks and certainly large enough if cut right.  I know very little about cutting the blank from the tree, I buy most of my blanks from a gunsmith that I have known for a long time and most of them are sugar maple.  It may be worth considering.

I happen to have an old rollingblock stocked with cherry.  It's really pretty.

That's 3/8" chain.  The end tongs I made myself out of broken logging tongs.  Check out this link.

If you do want to cut some stock blanks, let me know.  My wife wants me to build her a rifle with a cherry stock.  Here is a picture of two guns I built last year.

The picture didn't turn out very good but the guns did.  On top is of course a stock blank.  The top gun killed 3 deer last year and the one on the bottom was a Christmas present to my dad.  I would like to get pictures that do the guns justice but our current camera isn't up to it.  I think I bought a better camera for my wife for Christmas this year.  Have to wait untill she opens it though.

Wow! Nice work, Carpenter! Looks like your name should be Gunsmith :)

And Radar, don't feel too bad for WDH- He's got the nicest stash of curly cherry this side of Pennsylvania. I know, I helped him stack it (took 6 months of counseling to conquer the envy ;))
