Are you busy with your mill or has the economy slowed you down?
« on: November 22, 2009, 08:01:45 pm »
Since the beginning of September my phone has been ringing off the hook for custom sawing jobs.   I came home today to a another message that led to booking a 3500 bf sawing job.  :)

October I did 7 different customers jobs and so far this month I've sawed 2 weekends at customer sites and 4 jobs where logs were delivered to me here at the farm. Thanksgiving weekend I plan on doing 2 customer jobs that have already been dropped off here.   The kiln has a full load (2000 bf) in it and one waiting to go in.

This week I passed off a big job (big logs) to someone else because I just don't have the time.

If the economy is bad, it sure hasn't had an impact on my sawing business.  My plan is to saw 1 or at most 2 weekends per month. I'm going to have to start saying no again.  ::)

Anyone else this busy?

Mine has remained steady.  Looks like this will be my best year since I started sawing in '02.  I don't saw on weekends unless the customer absolutely has no choice.  I already have jobs booked for next year.

No full help on "business milling" but - Since you put your location as Northern Virginia I experience the same local economy when I'm local.
With the average US unemployment at 9.5% ours is under 5% (Fairfax, Arlington and Alexandria).
http://www.google.com/publicdata?ds=usunemployment&met=unemployment_rate&tdim=true&q=unemployment+rate+ch.  So we are pretty well off.
However on my recent travels (Seattle, Nashville, Jackson (MS), Columbus (OH), Indianapolis, Alexandria (LA)) of trips (which were all 1 or two weeks on site) everyplace was suffering much more.

Things are picking up, but I'm not surprised you are being worked hard in a place that's barely suffering.

Nothing going on here either, but it's my fault.  People keep calling and I keep declining.  It's slowing down now, so maybe they are beginning to believe me.  :D

here in ne ok ive got some business goin, not by any means booked up though. mine is all custom cutting  and lumber orders. no cant or ties. my business is picking up from back in the summer.i think people do more with what they have when there is a slump in the economy. making lumber from your own logs saves money on many projects and anthig to save a buck helps."a penny saved is a penny earned" my butcher friend at seneca mo tells me that he has a few spots to get a beef in for me in feb of2010. he's booked and full plus deer now that gun season opened yesterday . things look good at the mill about $400 of orders waiting on me for this week.  pc

I hit on a new market this summer that carried me thru nicely, the horse people are still spending money. But this last month my typical customer base have been calling, fire season is over and the rains have started so the ground is going to soften up soon so they have a small window to get there milling done so I have been spending more time on the back side of the wood lots. Winter storms are starting to pick up so the yard trees are calling to.

We kept pretty busy from late spring to early fall.  We never had much of a backlog of work and were never real sure if we had markets.  Our local retail lumber sales dropped to near nothing as did custom sawing.   We sawed mostly RR ties, cants, beams, and flooring lumber.

October was a bust.  Record amounts of rain kept the loggers from bringing us logs that we could saw product that we had markets for.  We probably only sawed a week total out of the month.

The rain stopped in early November and we had one good dry, warm week.   We picked up some local custom sawing and a few good local lumber sales.  But then rain came back and then deer season.

We sawed maybe a half a day last week.   We sawed most all day today on one custom sawing job and one local lumber order.  We’re done until we get another call.

We have been busy since the end of April through to around the 10th of Nov!  We saw "mobile", and this season, we sawed just over 56,000 board feet!
Now the mill is parked in the back of my garage for the winter.
This gives me time to do some of the "preventive maintenance".

So far, other than the usual checking things over, I need to change out the engine "pivot" bushings, which means I'll have to lift the engine off it's mounting plate.
Then, little things like rewire the debarker alarm!

So far I have 5 sawjobs lined up for the Spring!

I've been busy to very busy all year.  It is my first year so I have nothing to compare it too.  Most of the contractors I do work for have had steady work, and a couple of the ones I have talked to recently say things have gotten ridiculously busy the last couple of weeks.  Looks like it will be a good winter :).

Staying busy is easy. When I read this post my question was who is all stiff and sore from staying busy? I have the mill set up on a landing and the farmer has been bringing in a steady supply of fir and pine. He shipped out a semi fully loaded on Monday, on Tuesday he sent out a 28’ gooseneck equipment trailer load, and this morning he cleaned up the landing when he sent out another 28’ gooseneck equipment trailer load. He has a 4-man crew working so all I do is stand at the control panel. Just watching them boys work is making me all stiff and sore.

One set of insulated spade-type connectors, spliced into the red wire. Most of the time the alarm is unplugged. If there's strangers about, I plug it back in -- keeps them well back from the mill ;D ;D.

When I hooked up the original debarker alarm, it didn't work, so, I went to the auto parts store and picked up a regular "back-up" alarm and mounted it on the debarker guard, hooked up the red wire to the red wire that powers the debarker and the black wire to the debarker "ground"!
Wouldn't work, so I called Wood-Mizer in Hanibal and was told that the circuitry was different than the regular debarker alarm!
The technician said that I would need to go to a better ground, so I grounded it to the bolt that holds the debarker guard on!  Then the debarker alarm would only work "sometimes"!
So, now I think I'll just run the wires all the way to the derbarker power switch! That should fix it!

I believe it's actually there to warn people on the other side of the mill that the debarker blade is turning.

I guess that my left thumb is so automatically programed to switch it on and off, that I see no need for an alarm.  BTW, the alarm was disconnected on my mill when I bought it, and I've never seen a reason to reconnect it....... :)

My alarm works.   I like it that way.  I can't hear it from the operator position and it's loud enough to keep the helpers away from the front of the mill head where I don't want them to be.   I like them to be where I can see them.  That way no one gets hurt.

In July when the sam mill man came over he did immediately, well, there was a few days there his grandson from Flordia was visiting and he spent time with him.  We had contacted him in March and he said it's usually 4-6 weeks to book him.  Once he arrived he said nobody had the dollars to have trees sawed.  Heck it took us nearly 4 months to get an extra few bucks set aside, ain't nobody buying houses either!

I only saw part time, I still have a day job specialty welding which I still enjoy, but I still have abacklog of sawing customers waiting for me to do sawing for plus sawing for my self. Probably enough to keep me busy all winter & into summer weekends & evenings. I really enjoy making sawdust.....

Well it's happened again.    The phone calls won't stop coming in. I'm pretty well booked up to March with custom sawing jobs and the calls keep coming.   Last week I gave up 3 jobs to other sawyers and this week I've sent 4 more more customers to other sawyers.   I've got 3 sawing jobs backed up here at the farm to try and finish this week, the kiln is full and running with the next 2 loads waiting and a load being delivered for milling and drying in about 2 weeks.  :o :o :o

More than half the sawyers listed in the FF find-a-sawyer directory and those on Woodweb listed near me either don't mill anymore, don't answer their phones, or just plain don't call back.   whiteflag_smiley

I don't get a bunch of jobs a month but I do sell a lot of lumber to people who don't have access to their own logs.
This month is slow due to Thanksgiving and Christmas. But I'm thankful I do still have orders to fill. It'll pick up next year. January is usually real slow due to the weather! Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Yes, Merry Christmas, Red Oaks.  Be sure and have some cheese with your grits  ;D.

My little lumber business is very slow right now.  I guess people are busy doing other things.

I have 5 jobs booked for this year and a couple already into January.  I imagine that weather will push at least a couple of the 5 into January also.  I have not seen a slow down.

along with finishing one of the biggest custom jobs I have ever done, I recieved a call for 2 more trailer floors, and 300- 3x4-10' cants and 300-  5/8x6x45'' and 600- 2x4-64''. I am sure to make a lot of 5/8x4x40'' along the way.
So it seems to be picking up a little for me. It hapened last December too. I was way down in January finishing last year. PC

Best fall by far here, lots of repeat customers and referals plus some new ones. Right now sawing around 500 smaller red pine logs, they seem to saw better froze , straight even through the knots unless the blade gets dull.  Kinda cold yesterday, 0 for a low +12b for a high, way better today +12 low and almost 30 above.   Steve

Back in 2007, we had 4 crews sawing at one time, and then it pretty much shut down for a couple of years. We made furniture and did okay. Now, wood is coming back and I have one crew sawing full-time and one person making doors, etc.

Wood harvests off the plantations are just getting going, and wood sales are picking up. Looks like the time might just work out okay.

We have lots of field trees (probably over 500) that we are harvesting as well. Average BF is around 300 or so. That is a lot of wood.

To do well, we need to sell 1,000 dollars a week - that is pretty easy right now. We have some old growth Corteza (think IPE) that we are cutting, over 4,000 BF of it. It goes for about 5 dollars a BF. One sawmill can cut about 500 BF a day of it (really hard wood). So, one day, more than 1,000 dollars. The logs are big too, generally close to a meter in diameter.

The big markets tend to be softer woods, which we have lots of.
So, how did I end up here anyway?

I have 9 saw jobs ahead of me.  Most are "scheduled" for January and into February.  I use the word schedule loosely, because there is no schedule.  I will saw them when I get to them.  I just call the next customer when I'm within a week of being available.

We can saw all we want.  It’s not been as lucrative as I’d like.  Oak flooring prices keep sliding a little each month. The flooring mill has cut our quota again. Cost keep going up – mainly for fuel and repair.

Our custom sawing and small local orders have picked up some the second half of the year.  I’ve tried to get our prices up for custom sawing and for lumber in general.  But Mary is very reluctant.  On some new customers she’s charged the new rates but I find often times on old customers I get, “That’s what we’ve been charging them.”  To this I reply, “Have you seen anything we buy getting cheaper?”.

We’re going into winter with fewer logs than we have had in past years.  It’s been raining for a couple of days and the woods were already wet.  The last load of logs that came in before this last rain were muddy.  So unless it freezes up or turns sunny and windy for a week, our source for logs may dry up for the season.

We’ve got about a month’s worth of product stacked up waiting on one major customer to get caught up on paying us for over a month’s worth we’ve already delivered.  They bookkeeper says they have no money – but expecting some any day.

We have saved back a couple hundred 9’ tie logs in case we have to switch to cutting ties.

Besides our cant and flooring sawing, we have two trailer decks to saw out.

Slab customers want more than we can make.  Mary has a long conversation about every day with someone new wanting slabs.

I think the economy has a grip on lots of peoples wallets this year.

I saw "mobile" and on average, we are down approximatly 20,000 board feet.

Hopefully, things will pick up again in the Spring.

Makes me glad that my mill and sharpener are both paid for, lot less to worry about.

Things should be really tight on those that saw lumber as their only income.

We have a number of customers that pay after the delivery. But we know their pay terms and it's just a normal part of doing business.

This company has been on the brink of going out of business for three years. They have a cash flow problem and use us and other mills to smooth it out.

I'm happy to report that we got a check today from them today. Not all of what they owe.

Got a call last Friday.  Outfit wants 17 more trailer loads of fencing this year if all goes well.  Told me to get it in gear and get organized because he doesn't want to run out.  That is the first 50%.  Now I have all year to do the other 50%.  But I also know how some orders can do a disappearing act.

My sawmilling work is stacking up.  On December 15th, I had 9 jobs.  Today, it's 17, but I don't think any of them will be over 3-4Mbf.  It does look like it's going to be a busy Spring anyway.

I came across this older post while searching for something else and was curious how everyone's Spring shaped up - better, worse, as expected?

With reading some positive economic indicators lately (along with some not-so-positive), I was hoping you guys were seeing or feeling some uptick in work as well.

As things are going now I will easily double last year's sawing.  I have records from my past 10 years of sawing and they are all consistent.  I have previously averaged 100M bf per year.  This year is crazy.

Wow guys; that's great to hear! (except you not being able to work on your cabin MM)  :) I'm happy for you both. I hope lots of others chime in with positive things to say too. It'd be a nice note to start the weekend on, especially a Holiday weekend.

Don't forget to thank a vet, or yourself if you're one! Who knows what kind of society we'd be living in without those who were willing to give everything to preserve freedom as we know it.

Last year was very slow for me. It turned out to be a blessing as my wife was very sick and I needed to be home.   This past winter I had nothing. I am usually booked up all winter. So far this spring is very promising. I have 16 jobs waiting and I have been sawing six days a week. Sure dont have any trouble sleeping.                                                                                                                                                                                                 Will

The mild winter really helped out.  I am already 50% over my total for 2011.  Should easily double last year's production.  Unfortunately, many of my winter projects didn't get done, I was busy sawing. :) :)

I'm trying hard to be less than full time.  I have a waiting list that would take me 4 to 6 weeks to clear if no one else were added to it, but people are being added to it at a rate that always seems to keep it about the same length.

Yup Peter, that dreaded list.  Counting the one that I should finish next Wednesday, I'm down to 16.  I thought that it would be 15, but another called today.

I am running 7 days a week and 16-18 hour days. I am still behind at the moment. I am hoping to catch up late July and go for a long bike ride. (hoping the pig roast) and beyond. ;D

I've had the mill out for 2 weeks and have turned away 4 jobs and sent them to the neighbors.  They are so far behind they are starting to turn people away.  It's busy out there.

I usually cut pallet lumber in my slow times.

I haven't cut a pallet board since last November.

I am trying to get some haying finished and can't seem to stay away from the mill. It seems like someone is always calling for a quote or ordering more  of a product I have cut for them before. I will stop and cut some rafter boards for my church in June to be put up in July.
It seems to be going real well as far as custom orders. PC

My opinion is that when the "economy, etc" slows down and folks are tightening their belts, they are looking for bargains.  Since lumber is still needed, instead of costing them money, I am actually saving them money.

So far this Spring, it seems the economy is up compared to last year!

I know there are a lot of people building around this area!

Even the price of gasoline has dropped, went from $3.999 to $3.799/gal.  8)

So, things are looking up!
