Do you think it would pick out the walnut from the husk on the ground?
Mine seem to be a combination of partially removed husk that can either be mushy or dried and crusty. I'm thinkin getting just the walnut would be iffy, at best, with this machine.
Would be great to see one working, to know what stage of walnuts on the ground works best.

Our trees drop most of their crop within a few days of the first hard frost and a follow up wind and the hulls are still for the most part intact so the model for 1 1/2" would work fine for me I think  :)  In your situation a model for smaller diameter objects may work better  ???

When I was a kid growing up in Ohio every fall ,  we would boil our traps in water with a bunch of walnut hulls and then hang them in the trees until needed.  It would darken them and leave a natural sent, at least that is what we were told to do by an old trapper.   Clif

Ground walnut shells are also used for polishing brass for reloading. :)

I have found that vice-grips work pretty well to crack black walnuts.  You can also sit and possibly watch tv/movie instead of standing by a vice.

Welcome to the forum. Look forward to hearing more from you.

I'm game to give the vice-grips a try...but a bit skeptical, I'll admit up front... ;D ;D

Make offer!

This year, as a small, family fund raising project for my son's baseball team, we are processing several hundred black walnuts from a large black walnut tree in our woods. Never done this before, so I'm honestly not entirely sure how they turned out. Look good, smell like black walnuts, some nice decent sized pieces.

Last weekend we produced an initial, small sized bag of nuts, maybe 1/2 pound or so with lots more to process, assuming there is demand/if there is someone who wants it.

I exchanged a message with someone a while back about wanting black walnuts to eat/cook with. Buy all of it, a small amount whatever you want. I'm not even sure whats a fair price. You tell me. It's a fundraiser, so please be fair!

Shoot me a private message if you are interested. Would prefer payment over paypal.

Thanks for your time,
Greg

Do you still have any walnuts for sale? I am interested in Black walnuts .
How much are you asking for them and what sizes and I do have paypal account
Thanks

Hello all.

I'm still following up with a half dozen or so Forum-ites, and it appears our supply of black walnuts is sold out for the year. Ended up going with $10 a pound this year, based on some suggestions. From what I've seen around at grocery stores and on the internet thats a very competitive price.

Anyways, those that have contacted me I will be following up with you shortly if not already. Next year, I might try to get more organized and ask for request ahead of time to plan better to meet additional demand. (If you want a pound or two for 2009, just send me a private message) I'm trying to cobble together a fairly heavy duty crank assembly with some stainless steel rollers from spare parts, to help with some of the cracking drudgery.

Our production this year will max out around 10 pounds. Doesn't sound like much, but its a lot of work. We all have black fingers around here... It was a fun project. I hope my boys appreciate (a little) more the value of earning a dollar ;-) Thanks for all the interest. My son's 13U baseball team appreciates the contribution.

Have a good thanksgiving,

Greg

Snowrose,
I sure hope you stick around and post some more.  That is the prettiest avatar I have seen here on the forum. :)

My kids will pick up walnuts from their grandparents yard and take them to the Hammon buyer. Price is usually $10 to $13 per hundred pounds (out of the nasty green husk). You back up the pickup, shovel or dump the green balls into the hopper of the machine which knocks off the husk, and a worker bags the walnuts in mesh bags. When done the bags are weighed and crisp $10 bills are handed out.

This tool works great for saving the back in picking them up: http://www.nutwizard.com/

FWIW,

Here's a quick picture of a couple pounds of the walnut meat I am getting ready to send out. First in a ziploc bag, second in a small pile on a cutting board. Hard to tell from the pic, but the pile's a couple/three inches deep.

See ya,
Greg
