What chain to use on white or red Oak
« on: October 31, 2009, 09:16:42 am »
Hi All,

Was wondering what people like to use while cutting red or whit oak.

Here are a few I use.  I haven't used a square chisel Yet but have listed one below that I may be interested in using.

Woodland Pro 30LP56, Oregon 91VX-56

Woodland pro 20RC78, Oregon 20LPX-78

Woodland Pro 30SC72, Oregon 72DP-72
Woodland pro 30RC72, Oregon 72LGX-72

Square Gound Chisel chain
Oregon 72CL Chain, Stihl 33RSLK

Thanks,
Tom

I use the 30RC for my 20" bars for everything and I cut mostly oak. In the beginning I had tried the 72LG and various variants, but, ended up using the 30RC for the best value for the best price.

Thanks Rebocardo,

Any luck using a 30LP on smaller saws or the 72CL chisel chain?

Can anyone else comment on what they use and why the like it.

Thanks,
Tom

They all cut .You have to kind of watch though when you sharpen them .The Oregon takes a ten degree up angle while most if not all of the Woodland pro is straight accross . Trust me they don't cut too well with a compoud angle which I learned the hard way .

Al -

I'm glad you mentioned the 10 degree up angle on the Oregon vs straight across for the Woodland Pro. I've been using Oregon chains. I'm going to be putting on my first Woodland Pro chain in the next few days. I had forgotten all about the different filing geometry. Now if I can just figure out a way of reminding me to check what I have on before I sharpen, I'll have it made.

Well it certainly screwed me up .I couldn't figure how in the world that after the first time I put the file to it cut lousey . I certainly am better with a file than that I thought .

It annoyed me so much that I hung the few loops I had of it on a nail and used the Oregon . Then a member of another forum showed me the error of my way . :-[ Well s--- er things happen . :D

That said though ,all said it does okay as far as cutting .I think compound angled  Oregon is a tad faster but that is just an opinon .

I use 23rc on  my smaller saws, I forget what I used on my gas and electric 10" saws.

Nobody that I know of makes a chisel chain in 3/8 " lo pro . The best you can find is some variation of non guard type semi chisel .

Now way back when Oregon made small chisel chain in full comp and semi  believe it or not .You can thank Ralph Nader that they don't any more . Mr. know it all convinced the safety people that small saws were manufactured for non pros who  would likely injure themselves with an aggressive chain .
