Looks sorta like a grinder for a cider press.  Or for people like me who buy really crappy cuts of beef attracted by the low price.  What can I say, my idea of steak is CHICKEN FRIED! 8)

Yep!  They use those a lot up in Canuckistan.  They don't always work as advertised. ;D

It looks like a it might be a device to put holes into a board or timber that is to be pressure treated.  Some timbers are treated to refusal without being totally dry.    Some species contain a lot of Heartwood.   Holes are punched into them (encising)  to make them take the treatment better. Look at veneer cores/landscape timbers, for example.

Well, it's a guess anyway.  :D :D

I saw it in a "museuem" where a now deceased fellow collected all kinds of old farm implements.

it is in the logging section.

I have been curious to it's purpose since I first saw it.

It looks a lot like an anchor winch on the early ships where they used rope to hoist the anchor!  ;)

So,  could it be a winch that was used with rope to winch logs out of the woods!  ;D

How's it powered?  It looks like there's a hand crank of some sort.

It is hand cranked and you can see that the crank handle on the right side has a ratchet gearbecause the handle cannot be turned all the way around because of the base. This is PART of some kind of press, it's definetly not a winch. The spikes would break with a chain or cable and would shred a rope in short order. It looks like there should be another roller on top.

Possibly at the end of the slab removal belt to toss the slabs off? Would be powered rather than cranked though.
