Log Bed from da U.P. woods
« on: September 07, 2009, 09:08:09 am »
I had a long detailed post here, but lost it with my phone connection. I'll give it another but more abbreviated go but copy it before hitting post.

I Decided to use some of the blow downs on my property to try and build a log bed. I don't have a lot of tools up here so have been getting by with stuff on hand like hatchets chainsaws and hammers. Couldnt even find a ratchet strap, so a rope and a hammer to twist it up suffices for that.   Here are some photos of what I have so far.  Today I'm going in search of parts that want to be the foot board as I have the headboard pretty much completed.

Jeff,

You and several others here never cease to amaze me how you see then build these things.

Some people have it some don't. I don't.

Great Job!

Those buttressed feet look really neat.

I'd look at the curved one and see bonfire wood. Jeff sees head board.

Cool  8) 8)

I love the feet ! I'll bet you have a lamp that matches  :D

Might want to add a twig or two to keep your pillows from escaping ???

I'll be interested in how you hold the rest together ? Gonna put a dowel thru the joints ?

Joan, I'll have ta letcha know as I do it, cause I dont have plan one. Just wingin it.  :)

Here is what I found today towards the foot board. No buttresses on the footboard posts as they are the parts of the tree that grew above the headboard posts. :)

Figureing it out

I have one more arched piece I want to put on the footboard yet.

Well that'll give ya a good night's sleep. Easier on the bones than the floor.  ;D Now, whose gonna make the feather tic and pillows from some nuisance geese? ;D Your already working on the bear rug, just need to pull the trigger on one of those pet bear. ;)

Bed looks great. I agree those buttressed feet look nice. Cedar smells nice to, until you put a finish on.

I saw a rugged bed a couple years ago, where some one carved it out to look like fiddle heads on the bed posts. He had a lot of other detail to. It was for sale, but too rich for the local folk. Too sophisticated for most folks that do well with an iron bed frame. ;) I'll take one of those cedar beds though.  8)

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

I love all the stylistic curves from the curved buttress on the head posts to the curves in the rails on the headboard and footboard.  It isn't just that the bed is made from logs, which could look clunky, it is the flowing style that gives it artistic class.  Wow!

How could you be more proud of the out come? I dont believe I could do better with a shop that has 100,000 worth of equipment. Good show Jeff. Your great grandchildren will enjoy sleeping in that bed as well.

Well, I think they look ok together. They were built on separate ends of the cabin sidewalk, and this was the first they were brought together.
