28" bar?
« on: August 05, 2009, 08:20:36 pm »
A year ago I ordered a 28" bar for my Husky 359 and some full skip chain for the occasional times I need a bigger bar. I usually use either an 18" or 20". The bar was ordered from a supplier in Boonville, NY called CJ Logging. When it came I set it aside for when I needed the longer bar. When I needed it, I tried it on and it is wrong :(. The 359 has a small mount and the bar was a large mount. Does anyone know where I can find a 28" bar for occasional use to fit the husky small mount?

I look it that they supplied the wrong part. It is up to them to make it good or give my money back. I will let you know if they give me a hard time. If they do I will have a new 28" large mount bar for sale very reasonable.

Update. The supplier that delivered the wrong part told me he will reorder and send me the right one. He took the wrong one back for an even exchange and he will pay the shipping to deliver the right one. I therefor highly recommend CJ Logging of Boonville, NY. They are making things right even after a year from the original sale. I had no riceipt but the item was special ordered for me and they remembered the situation, therefor they are righting it. I was impressed, but I really thought in this situation they would in the first place because they sent the wrong part and I did not order the wrong item.
Again, I highly recommend CJ Logging of Boonville, NY for your business. Maybe Jeff should see if they would be a FF sponsor.

I will buy from them again. They are a huge presence at the NYS Woodsman's Field Days. They have a whole pole barn to themselves that is about 60-80' wide and about 150-200' long, that is their sales barn, with likely 30 sales people at all times to assist customers. They fill the whole barn.
CJ Logging sells everything from chainsaws to parts, to skidders, to feller bunchers, other harvesters, ATV's and everything in between, and experts to answer every question about any item. They have a sales counter just for saw bars and chain, and assorted saw parts that is likely 100' or more  total maned by a swarm of  staff. They do it right and big, an unusual combination. They are a full line logging supplier based right in Boonville, NY serving the entire logging industry, especially the Adirondaks and beyond. Logging is a huge business in this area, with Boonville as a hub. It is rare they do not have an item in stock and need to order it, my bar was one such item, being longer than most go for a small mount Husky.

Update, They kept trying to tell me a 28" was not available for a Husky 359. I pointed out that Bailey's has it listed so they called Oregon. Oregon told them they do not inventory it but does make it on special order. I finally have a 28" coming. It is only available in .050 ga. I will now need to see what ga Chain I ordered. CJ Logging told me if I have any other ga they will trade it out. I was told it should be there in 2 or 3 weeks, I'll keep you posted.

I will not be cutting very often with the 28, but I want to be able to trim up or buck logs on occassion and my Peterson handles BIG logs, therefor I need a big bar to reach half way without having to whittle my way in to use a smaller saw. On rare occasions I also need to drop a BIG tree and again, I like to reach at least half way. My last big tree was 57" at the height I needed to cut it. I had to trim off several inches on each side before my 20" bar would reach half way. What a pain!
If I was routinely making cuts like these I would get a saw that would handle 32 or even 36" bars, but as I stated, it is very rare. According to what I found on the web before I first ordered a 28" bar I read that using skip chain I could extend the max bar size by about 25%. The 359 is rated for 24" (+ 25%=+6", but I went conservatively with +4") At this point I don't have any idea where I read the 25% figure but I need to try it for my occasional must have times.

The 359 uses the small mount and the bar studs are not strong enough to handle that much bar very often. This is why you're having such a hard time getting the bar. If you step up even a little bit to a slightly larger saw, the Huskys over 60cc or so utilize the larger bar mount pattern. Your 359 is probably the largest Husky utilizing the small mount pattern.

I had a 24" for a modded 357. Just didnt like it for that size saw in hardwoods, even though it ran fine with it.
Couldnt see straining the saw. So traded it away and keep the 16"-20" for the 357 and the 24"-32" for the 372,066

I will therefor need to make sure the few times I need to use it that I don't force the cut and stress the mount. I will need to be sure the chain is well sharpened at all times. I generally do already keep my chains sharp, on this one I will need to be extra careful.

I run a 28" bar "small mount" on my JD CS62 (62CC, 4.7HP) mainly for ripping w/ my Mark III.  About the most I've "buried" it is about 20" on a rip on red maple.  I don't think it would handle a 28" cut well at all.
