No, it's not an oak, I don't believe. It has a trunk that looks a lot like Crepe Myrtle, smooth, slick and creamy brown . It's also not a Beech. It grows intermixed with Blue Beech and requires a fairly wet ground. I think it would make a great ornamental and would look good in an Oriental setting.
This one I don't know the name of. I found it one time years ago in a book, with the help of a consulting forester but have been unable to locate it again. It is not rare and my problem is more one of confusion than lack of documentation.
