spent the early part of yesterday cleaning and tweaking my collection of small orange machines.  When I was finished they looked so nice like a happy orange family. :D

Last week we sold our 084 and bought a new MS 440 ;D

Then a customer dropped off a bundle of 3" dia Cedar.

After the guy left Linda grabbed the saw and threatened to "saw up" his Cedar.

I encouraged her to do so as I grabbed the camera off the forklift. I wanted to watch Linda's boots fill with chips :D

I often try to work it around so I get "ordered" to do something that I think might be of question in the ultimate decision.  ;D
(Don't mean to imply that electricAl would do such a thing though).

Nice saw, and Linda's plan to saw that cedar into kindling lengths might be the best decision (shudder a bit when I see a saw in hand and no chaps on). However, I suspect the customer had 6" wide boards in mind. What will you make out of it?

That's a nice looking line-up of saws James, I'm a Stihl man but Patty has a Husky that is a real nice saw. I showed her your picture and explained how could she stand to see someone else with more saws than me. Her reply was NOT "oh honey you go out and buy as many as you think you need".

Wood-Mizer would do well for themselves to show how many gals use their saws. Although I don't think I would want Patty to wear her summer work clothes to demo them in. When it's hot in the sawshed you tend to forget about etiquette.

Linda,

How much would you charge me to give Becky
some lessons?   I could sure use some more help
around the sawmill.     Heck she pitched in
at Noble's to help with the milking so I figured that
all she needs is a little encouragement and she
would become a great sawyer.    :D

Perry,

Start by telling Becky she would make a great sawyer.

Find a nice quiet place where there are is no crowd.

Ask her if she wants to tag along when you go sawing.

Encourage her to make a couple cuts.

When she starts, walk a little ways away.
( find some busy work ;) )
Close enough for comfort, far enough not to hover.

Praise her for a job well done ( no mater what  :-X ).
About 10 good praises for every criticism, should be encouraging.

You can work on speed and quality of cut some other day. ;D

yes to the tractorbynet typhoon, i like that site as most of the info is good and solid.  Those of you with tractors should check it out as there are forums for most makes along with repairs, attachments and others.  Also if you want a place to put photos of a larger size it allows 100,000 or so.  When i resize photos now I make two copies one for here and one for there.

whitepe,

Yes, to everything Linda said. The last thing she needs is a crowd of folks to watch....makes one too nervous & shy. Second, give her all the time she needs. The sawmill is very intimidating, and slow going is what she will want to do at first. REAL SLOW. It'll drive you nuts, so just walk away and leave her alone. She'll come after you when she is done or needs some help. PATIENCE is huge, if you are nice and show her she can learn to do this, she reward you over & over.
I have only run our mill a couple times, it makes me nervous as hell, but Norm just stands back and lets me putter through, some day I won't be so slow & nervous, until then he'll just have to suffer through the learning curve with me.
Personally I prefer to off-load the wood. I like the excersize, and being able to see the beautiful grain on the lumber as it comes off the mill.
Good luck. ;)

I didn’t have my camera with me the other day when Mary lugged the Stihl 044 with 25” bar out to the log yard to buck up some logs.  “Her” Huskquvarna has a clogged gas filter.

We hadn’t had our first mill a month back in the spring of 93 and I asked Mary to saw.  She liked to help but didn’t want to have anything to do with the sawing part.  After quite a bit of nagging,  she finally made one cut and walked away.  “There.”  She said.

It was years later that I come home and found she had used the mill to saw some lumber she wanted.  I says.  “Ah Ha! … You can saw after all.”  She said as long as no one was looking.  So I’d go way away and do something else and I’d here her sawing away in her slow but cautious manor. After about 6 months of this she would let me offbear. I’d try to give her pointers but she’d say, “You saw your way and I’ll saw my way.”   It was more than a year probably before she’d saw with anyone else there.

Now,  I don’t think she cares who’s watching - just keep out of her way.  She does at least 90% of the sawing.  This summer we’ve been so swamped with sawing she’s had to abandon her slow and meticulous methods and trust her eye and judgment better.

Hey Bibbyman,

I just have to ask....were you known as "Bibbyboy" in your younger years?  :D  My next question would be...Have you ever worn anything besides bibs?  ???

Blue eyes,

I apologize for overlooking your question.  There aren't any chips flying for a couple of reasons.

First, I was only threatening to use Al's brand new, never been used, 440 on that beautiful pile of twigs (that I couldn't believe we were actually going to saw.  ::) "My saw" is the 021 (my baby).

Second, I decided it wasn't good customer relations to hack up someone elses pride and joy.  :(

The third reason is, I can't run a gas saw anymore.  I have developed a rather severe allergy to petroleum products, so unless I want to take a chance on ending up in the emergency room, I am stuck with the electric chainsaw. >:(

C,

I grabbed a shot of the 2x12 Cedar lumber before it left.

Well it's a little scant, only 1" by random.

I told the customer it would cost a dollar per minute to saw.

His reply,    give me 75 dollars worth ::)

Norm,

Al would pay to saw up a cat!  :D

Several years ago, Al got so mad at a guy that he threatened to throw him on the saw and cut him in half!  :o

I think he enjoys sawmilling just a little toooooo much!  ;)

On a different note; where is this ladies of lumber calendar?  I guess I have been too busy to notice much on the FF lately.

The story of the name Bibbyman
« Reply #29 on: September 12, 2003, 08:29:29 pm »
Linda asked if I was called Bibbyboy when I was little.  No,  I don’t remember.  I don’t even remember wearing bibs.  My mom rummaged through some old pictures and came up with the one I’ve posted here.

Linda’s next question,  No,  I didn’t always wear bibs.

In fact, I probably bought my first pair no more than 4 or 5 years ago.  I found them just the thing to work in – plenty of room and pockets for tools, etc. Everyone thought it was quite funny.  Or I was funny looking.  Mary didn’t like me wearing bibs at all.  But after a bit she got accustom to them and me in them so it got to be no big deal.  I’d even wear bibs in public and she didn’t mind. I’d come home from the office where I’d be dressed in slacks and dress shirt and she say “Why don’t you go change into your bibs?”  She started to call me “Bibbyman”.

Now half the world sees me in my office attire and the other half sees me in my bibs.  The one exception is Mary who sees me in my ….. well…  Ok.  You don’t want to know. ;D

When I started making comments on the Forums,  I started using the handle Bibbyman.  I wanted to put some distance between me and the general public.

Maybe next time.

Bib,

I feel better now!  You must type 500 wpm!  I injured my finger the other day and boy is it hard to type now.  Al just laughs and says I should have learned to type the "right way" (hunt and peck method) like he does.  ::)

David,

Linda has this goofy way of typing. She spreads her fingers all over the keyboard so you can't see the letters ???

A while back she was proof reading a post and she had left out the "n" in "an".

You should have seen how long it took for her to cover all the letters then try to remember where the "N" was. :D

Guess what Guys, I am pretty sure I know how to put a picture on the top of our forestry forum calander. We gotta be sure that the gals are up for it. Tammy and Stacy's birthdays are october and november and I just asked them and they say they will play.  :D They want those months. Norm send me a bigger picture, higher resolution for Patty for the September.

We need a Christmas month pic now!
