"Old Blue" (Peavy) Goes to the Scrap Pile
« on: April 22, 2009, 12:59:24 am »
Old Blue is actually the result of breaking the wooden handle off the original peavy then welding on a schedule 40 2" steel pipe as the makeshift handle.  The scrap pipe happened to be blue.  Its been safe and usable but pretty darned heavy.  Last Saturday was the warmest day so far.... around 90 degrees and I did not drink nearly enough water for the amount I was sweating trying to saw in the sun.  Ended up with heat sickness.  Nocked me out for the rest of the day and the next.  Decided then to do what I could to make the work easier.  Thats where the bright blue new Logrite comes in.    Im going to be happy to break in the new Logrite....... not going to miss Old Blue.  8) 8) 8)

Im VERY impressed at the quality of the Logrite.  Its made to be a lifetime tool.  And maybe Im going to enjoy sawing a few more years.   Baileys had it at my door step in two days.  We have some really good sponsors here on the FF.  Watch out though, Tamiam will be encouraging the rest of you to not drink water on the first few hot days of the season... :o

"Old Blue" is on the left and "New Blue" is on the right.....in case it was not obvious  :) :)

I have to say that I have seen alot of folks get to hot and do some strange things but never knew one to make a good a choice as you did.  They have other models and a man never has to many good tools.
Please be careful as heat can mess you up for life and even end it.

I agree with Medows Miller, hang it up on a barn or shed. When someone wants to borrow a peavy, give them that one  :D

What kind of logs are the peavys leaning up against and are you milling them?

I've got two.  ;D

I checked with Mark, my local Sthil dealer, and he hasn't yet heard about Logrite peavies from his rep.  :-\

I think I have around six now. I had to get that many because when friends come over to watch/help me saw they were always fighting over the LogRite hooks. So I just got enough for everybody. I kept two wood handle peavies that I like and gave the rest away. Around fifteen to twenty if them. Goodbye and good riddance.

O.K..... the vote is in.  I'll save old blue but he was sure looking like a pretty good fence post there for awhile.. :D :D    And it seems like I better plan on adding at least one more LogRite.  Im really happy with it since I have to load and turn logs manually.

Jon, the logs are English Walnut with Black (Claro) Walnut root stock with some partial burls at the bottom.  Unbelievably beautiful wood but hard to handle on the mill and slow.

Tam, your peavy is unexpectadly made so well.   :) 8)    I just had to look at it awhile to marvel at the detailed workmanship with the fitted pins for the  point and arm holder not to mention the good looking welds.   You really hit a home run on the design and workmanship. 8) 8)     I just have to remember to drink plenty of water before wrestling with the logs now but Im off to a good start with the lighter weight.  :) :)

Hey SwampDonkey , Sthil in Alta still hasn't heard of logrite yet , got itchy so talked woodmizer Canada to stock more selection for us . Boy didn't have to twist there arm at all! I ordered 2-24 mill specials,2-30 hookaroons. Now up to 7 logrite tool in arsenal, probably won't quit till I'm up to even dozen! :D Took about 3 months to get ball rolling, paperwork , custom painting, shipping etc. but worth waiting for! I love these tools, I didn't think to ask what all they stock now, just thought I would let us northern boys know!!!Have a good one.

I was the fine reciepient of some Frickman's cast off's (there hanging on my wall, enjoyed most everyday ;)), the "users" are Logrites except the ones I leave under the truck bed (straddling the frame and bed, salt ,mud, grime).

Left Coast, I was out there for the REAL heat a few years ago, I sat in the car w/ the AC running after setting up the tent @ Whiskytown, WHEW, I'd melt! 110 or so and HUMID :o

I know......... ???, 90 degrees isnt really much heat and thats why it did not trigger to drink much water.  I was sweating alot since I was in the direct sun, long pants, dark hat.   I just kept working since I had some help.    By the time I got thirsty it was too late, bad head ache, nausious, weak, red in the face.  The head ache did not go away for about another 24 hours.  Im physically strong and can go pretty long hours but my day job is in an air conditioned building so there is little or no acclimation if you get a hot Spring day.  This is the second time it happened but none were to the point of turning white, stop sweating and shock.... thankfully.

Whiskytown lake is really nice but as for camping in the summer there, only boaters do it since they are in the water most of the time.  I can't imagine camping under the Manzinita brush in the red dirt at 110 F.... :o    which.....occurs at least an average of 20 days or so on or off during the summer here.   118 and 120 have happend.  I can remember putting my hand out the window on the freeway and the tips of my fingers getting too hot to bear.  You can fry an egg on the hood of your car if you want.  I only work in the early morning or late evening on those days.   For us its only an hour or so to mountain lakes near by at 4000' or head to the coast.  Auhhhh...... thats relief! :)

I remember one day a couple of years ago when the hottest recorded temp that day worldwide was in Redding. It forget what that temp was but the same day it was 117 up here. Working in heat doesn't bother me much for some reason, I can keep going along while everyone else is dropping like flies. It sure is miserable sometimes though.

That would be quite hot here. When cutting brush I drink lots of water. When I get to the car at the end of the day it's almost like I was in the rain all day. I carry some dry gear to ride in comfort on the way home. ;D

I have had heat exhaustion a few times (mostly while in the Army), while training in Hawaii. I keep track of myself these days, I generally just get a migraine that won't go away until sundown( no matter how much water I drink).
