What are they harvesting?  Can you tell?  I thought it was pine, but the bark is slick.  I'm amazed at how fast and cleanly the bark comes off, too.

That's Eucalyptus they are debarking at the stump. Most likely in a tropical forest. That head is made specially for that purpose with those slanted corrugated ridges that break the bark loose.

There has been some of that done here it the US, particularly in the UP in the spring on Aspen. They called it "Peeled Popple" and the some cut to length machines changed to special feed rollers and even then you had to feed the tree back and forth repeatedly to "peel" the bark off. The ones that did it said it was a pain to do, but paid well.

Now that must have been interesting debarking that slick popple. Like trying to catch and hold a greased pig.

when i was a kid, my uncle would peel poplar pulp logs, paid better. problem was keeping them on the trailer once loaded

They went that route here a few years ago to debark timber out in the woods, they also chipped on site. When the equipment wore out, they never reinvested. The next generation I see now, aren't debarking any more, they are chipping for bio-electricity plants. And such operations are few and far between for now. I only know of a couple in my area. One a major supplier and one a ding dong type operation. No he isn't stupid by any means, but he can get away with anything.
