Woodmizer on concrete floor.
« on: January 28, 2009, 09:33:16 am »
My Woodmizer mill is on concrete.
WM says that this is a no-no.
Is the alleged problem with support post failure?
If so, how about pieces of heavy rubber, cow mat or old truck bed mat under them.
Too cold here to saw and about 2 1/2 ft of snow.

Never heard that before.  ???   I 've wished I had mine on concrete.   If it's got something to do with shock from truning / flipping cants transfering to the support posts, then the cow mats should do it.   At about $46 each I'd buy one and cut it into six pieces and put one piece under each post.

Never heard of it. Know a guy that started with a gas LT40 and udgraded to a super, after several thousand hours went to another super, put several thousand hours on it. Never knew him to have a problem. Just in case though, the cow mats wouldn't hurt nothing.

The problem is with the adjustable legs. They have a tendency to slide on the concrete when logs are moved around. There are staionary legs you can buy to anchor the mill to the concrete floor.

I have a woodmizer on concrete, works great but when you roll on a large log it will slip up to a foot, so i put a large eye bolt at each end  of the concrete slab and roped the mill to it. it could tip over with a large log

I drilled 8 one inch holes  (two on each end and two on each side) put a small pieces of #6 rebar in each hole.  No more movement.  Tim

I use a LT70 on  a polished concrete floor it will move a little with loading and turning.Every so often we'll hook the skidsteer on and pull it straight, not really a problem.Frank C.

Your worries are correct about the legs on a concrete slab.  I have a 2006 model Super E-25 on a slab and after approx. 600 hrs the holes wollowed out on the adjustable legs and began to saw uneven.  To solve the problem we drilled a 5/8" hole through the legs and put in hardened bolts.  It would be best to get the statioary legs from Woodmizer, but no more problems yet.

We have a few guys up here running mills on concrete, with little problems. I believe most have the stationary legs (solid) on them, and some have them bolted down through the foot to the floor. I have seen people weld the regular style of leg too, if you do it carefully you still have the option of cutting the welds and going portable again...
The name's Ian. Been a sawyer for 6 years professionally, Dad bought his first mill in '84, I was 2 years old :). Factory trained service tech. as well... Happy to help any way I can...

Mine is on a wood floor, rather than concrete (which is more pleasant to me  ;D), but is anchored every other leg, staggered, with 3/4" lagbolts into the joist.  Undo those, and I'm still portable, though my inclinations are less and less in the portable direction.

I have talked with a couple guys around here that have them on concrete and both have had problems with the pin on the front leg. It could be just a lack of a maintenance program and the operator not paying attention to the pin at the start of the day. Being mobile you check the pins on the legs every time you move the mill and thru out the day while you are running it. As far as dropping logs on the deck you don’t want to do that even on soft ground. If you are going to set up stationary take some of the wood you mill and build an infeed deck, either high or low.
