Finding Foresters
« on: November 30, 2008, 08:43:33 pm »
This is a great site here guys.  I've been snooping around for about  2 months now.  My wife and I like the idea of having a recreational property.  We realize that it can also pay some of the note by making sure the trees are managed correctly.  I need to speak with a guess a parish forester in general about the timber industry in my area.  Then I would need to contact private forester when I start looking at specific properties, and to get a management plan going.  So I have found Wade Dubea in Baton Rouge, 5 hours away.  I need someone closer.  I'm looking at this long term so I need to pick the free brain first then spend some good money on a smart one.   If anyone knows anything, I'm in Shreveport, La.

Welcome to the Forum
You've found the "free brains", so pick away. Sometimes ya's gets what ya's pays for... ;D ;D

Tell us some about the land you want to manage.

What is your idea of recreational property? Still private, or public invited to do something there?

What kind of recreation?

Well I am looking for anything I think will come close to my needs.  The Haynesville Shale has land prices pretty high around here.  I could care less at this time about the mineral rights to the land.   I would like to be able to hunt deer and duck, ride atv's and dirtbikes.  I have a large family and no one owns land that we can go on.  There are 12 kids in our family under 12.  Somewhere we could fish, camp, just run around silly.  I know a state park sounds perfect.  Just like a ton of other people I want my slice of heaven.  I would like to keep it private.  Let me be clear that I am not rich, I do handle my finances well, but I cannot just write a check for the land and sit back.  It needs to be able to pay some of its way.  I have plenty of energy, not all the time, but I will try.  If a recreational activity is going to severely hurt an income stream it just won't be done.

There are ways of making land pay other than just agriculture.  There are others who would rent time, cabins, canoes, or even help with a sawmill or milking cows, just to get out of town and let their kids have an experience.  Perhaps you may be looking at some cabins in your future.  Got a sawmill?

Go to www.acf-foresters.org And use the find a forester function. There are several Association of Consulting Foresters members in the Shreveport area.

Thank you very much.  I spoke with my local gov't forester today.  Very nice and knowledgeable person.  I look forward to showing him a few pieces of land soon.  Thanks guys.
