It could also be one of DanG's weeping hackamatacks .
It looks a bit like shagbark hickory to me. The cold weather might have made the other leaflets fall off.Nope, on second thought, the edges are smooth. Not a hickory. How 'bout giving Persimmon a try?
My initial thought is blackgum. The leaf tips are sure acuminate . It could also be one of DanG's weeping hackamatacks .
I can unequivocably state, without reservation or equilibrium that that ain't no weeping hackmatack!
Any pics of the trunk to help my education along. I'm pretty sure I have some of them here as well.
A large blackgum has bark that looks a lot like sweetgum, only a tad scalier to my eye. It can also turn knobby when it gets big, especially on a dry site.
I agree that it's similar to sweetgum, except it breaks up into blocks that are a little more squarish than the long, rectangular blocks of sweetgum bark.
