Fall time spent in the U.P. in Oct 08

My finer half and I spend acouple of weeks in the fall each year, for the past half dozen years in the U.P.

Sorry I only give out general locations. I grew up there and when someone shares a place with me off the beaten track it is between us. But I will share photos.

The first few days where spent over in the western/south end. Not alot for pictures just some fun kicking back and riding the bikes.
The maple tree had all it's leaves the night before. Color was about 75% before the wind came thought.
 



The balance of the time was spent in the middle/ northern area.
Pasbuild and his friend Jim stopped by acouple times. We enjoyed the time spent b'sing.

It is much easier to drive to the top than hike it. But the view is still just grand.

This is the RR cut we have visited in the past.
This time we found a peice of hand cart rail sticking out.

Wally.....you could tell me where you was, draw me a map with pictures and even give GPS coordinates and I still couldn't find some of the places we went

And for years I always thought this was what pit run gravel looked like.
We always hated shoveling gravel, thats cause it was rocks.

What's the story behind the staggered wheels.

And I think the wheel became staggered *because* of a crooked log.    We're all gettin' pretty curious, pasbuild!

So it starts when this ding bat is riding around the woods looking at stuff.
Said ding bat finds this downed tree.
 



It was a nice hard maple that was broke off about 15 feet up.
Where it was broke showed full curl. 

So the ding bat made a mental note of where this treasure was located.
So later in the week I meet up with pasbuild and took him to the treasure find.
It was fun to watch somebody else get all  and run around looking at the find.

The problem being that the trail leading in and out looked like this and was rutted and muddy.
 


So I show up two weeks later and find the modern art/log arch.
When I take a ride to see what the tree looks like, I find the butt log and acoulpe others still there part way out of the woods.
As I ride towards the stump, I see firewood where it bounced out of the truck going up a hill.
I see slide marks in the mud and ruts.

Nailhead had introduced me to the forester in charge of that area years ago so I called him up and told him what I found, he gave me permission to retrieve it so my buddy Stan and I took off with the trailer ATV and log arch.
one thing ya don't want ta do is bring a one ton arch ta fetch a two ton log all it will do is cause ya a lot of grief.  We chained up the first log to the arch and started cranking on the come-a-long and the only thing that moved was the backbone of the arch (bend # 1) it was plain ta see that we weren't gettin those logs out full length so we shortened um up a bit and tried again, the ATV moved about four feet the log and arch moved about one (bend # 2) we ended up using chains and binders to hold the arch together enough to drag the logs out to the road. I'm not sure when bends 3 through 6 come about but you see the end result ( Artistry  )
