Forestry Personality Types?
« on: October 17, 2008, 10:17:10 pm »
Hello all.  I’ve been reading the forestry forum for a couple of weeks and have finally decided to step out of the woods, so to speak, and join the discussion.  I’ve really enjoyed reading and learning through the questions asked here—my girlfriend says I’m addicted (normally computers mock me).  Anyway, I’m relatively new to forestry and everything seems new and interesting.

After reading the forum for a while, I’m curious to find out about what personality types tend to gravitate to forestry.   It seems to me that forestry can offer the best of both worlds.  I think extroverts and introverts could both thrive in forestry.  It allows opportunities for people to work with others and independently, in the office and the field.  For instance, in consulting forestry, a more introverted person could work independently running their own business, but still work with members of the public on a one on one basis, which might fit their personality better.  On the other hand, a more extroverted person could work in an extension office, where they could interact with the public more.

Anyway, I’ve always been of the introverted type—reserved with a shy streak that can still be annoying at times.  Developing a people personality is still a work in progress for me, but I’ve gotten lot better than I once was in that regard.   It seems I naturally find trees better company than people at times (that sounds harsh now that I read it, but I think it is true).   My grandfather, from what my mother tells me, was also that way, but he owned his on logging business and was very successful.

Has anybody here ever taken the Myers-Brigg personality test?  They give it in high school and college a lot.  I’m an INFJ.   Here’s a link to a free MB test http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp  if you would like to find out your type.  It’ll give you a test you can’t fail.  Anyway, I look forward to interacting with all personalities here.

I'm an INTJ, i've taken the "online" versions of that test a few times, not sure how accurate they are compared to the real thing, though.

welcome to the forum!

I can't vouch for the accuracy of the online tests (Isawlogs, making dresses just doesn't seem to fit), though I did take an actual myers-brigg in college and it matched up with the online version.

According to one website, here are my possible career paths:

Clergy / Religious Work
Teachers
Medical Doctors / Dentists
Alternative Health Care Practitioners, i.e. Chiropractor, Reflexologist
Psychologists
Psychiatrists
Counselors and Social Workers
Musicians and Artists
Photographers
Child Care / Early Childhood Development

Unfortunately, there is nothing forestry related.  I guess we'll just have to burn our own paths.

INTJ as well.

Even got my day job correct - Computers

I suspect this group and the other Rationals will be fairly well represented as it's people that like building things, or taking things apart, as the case may be. Even though is says rationals are only 10% of the population, I suspect a lot will congregate here.

But it takes all sorts to make the world an interesting place. If would be pretty boring if there were no fashion designers or dressmakers.  ;) :D

Jeez, how much more accurate could that be as applied to the Forestry Forum.  They gave me a rather weird range of famous people with similar types.

Took a similiar test when I joined the military several decades ago. Said I was the type of person who tends to "think outside the box" ie a little on the weird side.;D I sorta fell into an occupation where that turned out to be an asset...

I got bored between classes  :P.

Statistical analysis

sample size so far: 17 (using the first given for those with multiple personalities  ;) )

Out of 16 potential MB types, we have 6 represented here:   INTJ(8 ) INTP(1) INFJ(2) ISTJ(1) ISTP(2) ENTJ (3).

Forestry Forum:
47% INTJ
5.5% INTP
12% INFJ
5.5% ISTJ
12% ISTP
18% ENTJ

US Population (Wikipedia):
2.1% INTJ     ISFJ 13.8%   ESTP 4.3%
3.3% INTP   ISFP 8.8%   ESFP 8.5%
1.5% INFJ   INFP 4.3%   ENFP 8.1%
11.6% ISTJ   ESTJ 8.7%   ENTP 3.2%
5.4% ISTP   ESFJ 12.3%
1.8% ENTJ   ENFJ 2.4%

Given this sample size, we can say that the forestry forum’s personality type is

82% Introverted, 18% Extroverted
82% Intuitive, 18% Sensing
88% Thinking, 12% Feeling
82% Judging, 18% Perceptive

Reading the profile of this type (and some of the others) is eye-opening.  It describes me perfectly.

Careers indicate Engineering, Natural Science, Computer Science, Education, Law, Management, Entrepreneurship and Librarian.    Since I've already picked up Engineering, Computer Science, Management and Entrepreneurship in my career, I guess I'll have to try the rest.   :D

So many introverts here, Gary_C.  Looks like we will have to throw a coming out party ;D.

Sounds good to me. Do we have to invite that DanG after he insulted us?  :D :D

I took this again, now 9 days later thinking it would be different. I was surprised to find my results were EXACTLY the same.

Jeff got the O of COMF correct. It does stand for old, as in Fat Olde Elf...  The C stands for CRAZY......The MF is sometimes written as one word and is a term of high regard and affection in some circles......Go figure...ENFJ is my real profile,,,,,,,,,

ENFJ, though the only thing really strong is the "N". The others were not far from neutral.

[edit] Just went back and did it again and got an INFJ, though in both cases the I vs E was borderline. The description for INFJ seems to fit me a lot better.

Hello; First Post
I came up INTJ, could be right, I have an ME degree, worked in hydraulic research for John Deere 67 to 74. Got fed up with the politics and some of the people I had to work with, and bought a dairy farm in Wis.  In 81 bought a Machine shop got a Frick sawmill with it. Never did very much sawing with it and sold it to the Amish. Sold the shop in 89 and since have worked as a machinest for a local manufacturer.

My youngest son is now on the farm (beef and crops/no Dairy), I take care of the woods (40 acres hardwoods and 50 acres plantation pine planted 89). I bought an old woodmizer 93 I think, a couple years ago, 24 HP Onan w/hyds. do some custom sawing and saw out what comes out of my woods.

Has anyone checked for their "compatible" personality and had their spouse take the test?  It lined up perfectly for us. 8)

Something that might be interesting is to have your spouse take the test as they see you. ???

I HOID DAT!! My second ex-wife was "into" all those psychobabble tests in the Women's magazines.  Every time she found one and filled it out, she'd be pithed off for a week!  You know the ones I mean.  If your husband is a neatnick, he's runnin' around on ya.  If he's a slob, he's runnin' around on ya.  If he's in between, well, he's runnin' around on ya.  If he plays hooky from work sometimes, he must have a girlfriend somewhere.  If he never plays hooky from work, well that means he has a girlfriend at work.

If ya didn't pick up on it, I don't care much for these kind of tests. :D :D :D :D

Jeez, how much more accurate could that be as applied to the Forestry Forum.  They gave me a rather weird range of famous people with similar types.

Welcome to the Forestry Forum WoolyWolf :)

Istj...... for what it is worth

Test are like surveys..... ask the right questions to get the answer you want.

I once had a english teacher that asked a question on a test that went something like this,

"read the following story an write what you think it means"

So I did and she marked my answer as wrong! I told her that she wasn't much of an english teacher if she can ask me what I think something means to me and the not give me credit for the answer, I told her the next time she better ask what I think she thinks it means.  :D

I still did't pass the test.
