Thanks, that's what I thought it was. First time I've come across one, not very common in this area. :)

I'm glad to see this.  Magnolia species mostly mean to me, large, thick, shiny leaves.  The wood you displayed is really pretty.

WDH and tyb525,  where did the tree get its name?   I looked at images on google and the trunk looks really weird, in one of the images, kinda like that Baobab tree in africa.

It is also called Cucumber Magnolia, or Indian bitter. The wood is similar to tulip tree, but heavier.

It's called a cucumber tree cause the young fruits look like small cucumbers.

I have seen a lot of it in the mountains of West Va East of the Sutton area.  Awesome cherry, too.

Looks like something that would make a good 5.75" by 5.75" by 1" square.

The stumps are where the cucumber trees were harvested. Lost about six feet out each butt log.

Still ended with a nice pile of boards.

It is like yellow poplar as they are cousins in the Magnolia family.

WDH, nothiing sceintific about my not very common in this area comment, maybe more not being properly identified. Had 2 older experienced woodsmen tell me they thought these trees were a poplar. Although there were only 3 now 1 on my 15 acre woodlot.

Jeff, I've had a piece of basswood dried and waiting for the finisher since last July . I'll have to get after that guy. :)

That is a nice symmetrical log sitting on the mill in that first picture.  Is that cucumber tree?

Negative, that would be a cherry log on the mill, the stack of boards would be what was salvaged from the cucumber logs. :)
