Don, you beat me to the "seek no further". :) The best way to get soil to root contact is with water, you might have to add some more soil as the water works out the air pockets. The water will actually pull the soil down into any holes. (Capillary action? )

I really enjoy the Sloane books, I have just about all of them. I know that he really pushed that timbers were adzed, but we now know that they were hewn with a broad axe. Unfortunately I worked for some one who tried to adze some 28' timbers instead of using a broad axe. The spectacle was alarming, the results hideous.

Mike, will you be going to the engine tractor show at Sloane/Stanley? It's less than an hour away, I'm thinking of going this year, if it's not too late.

Don, I didn't mean to belittle Eric Sloane, I really enjoy his books.  And I said to myself, after reading your post, "seek no further, that was it.".

It is apple pressing time.  One year we pressed some that weren't ripe and made gallons of apple jelly.  I am guessing the natural pectin present in them.    I am trying blueberries as well this year, squeezed in the press.          Tim

Michelle has been keeping it watered and we pulled it some each day. I'll bring some more soil around the exposed and lifted stuff this weekend.

Tim, I didn't take it as belittling, I was hoping I hadn't pointed out some of his errors too loudly in the past   :). From what I can tell he enjoyed finding out when he was mistaken as well. I don't believe I've ever seen an apple do that but I've not seen all apples.

These were on the verge of ripe, but if you see someone selling hard cider jelly on Ebay..

I'm curious how the blueberry squeezins turn out. We've been eating them every which way. It's been an unusually heavy crop for all that stuff that got nipped last year.

Yeah, heavy when the leaves are on. Similar, box elder is heavy until the leaves on the limbs wither up in a few days and then you can lift 2" branches 16 feet long like handling broom sticks.

Pre-commercial thinning pays off. :)

Hard cider apple jelly on your toast in the morning, maybe not the right way to start the day

We fresh pack 5 acres of Frozen blueberries, in the process the "clusters" coming off the the tilt table are collected and they go into the big freezer.  I brought back 40 pounds yesterday.  After they are frozen and then thaw out they are much juicer, I am in hopes they press out well.  Fresh berries just don't seem to juice easily.  They I plan on mixing apple and blueberry juice.   Tim
