I'm sawing to build a cabin

« on: January 17, 2010, 01:00:40 PM »

I have been using a 6 year old Whitfield pellet stove for the past two years. It  had a burned out electric start when we bought it used and we did not buy a new one.  It only had 3 heat settings and we just decided to update to a new, more efficient stove.  We looked at the specs on several stoves and decided on the Breckwell P2700FSA.  It's a good looking stove and heats very well and is definitely easier on pellets than the bigger Whitfield.  But that’s all that I can say good about this stove.

It has several major flaws that would keep me from ever buying or recommending a Breckwell stove again
1. The side panels are held on by a hinge at the back, bolts at the bottom and a magnet at the top.  This does not work and the sides make vibrating noises.  I currently have thin pieces of wood jammed into them to keep them quiet.
2. The room heat blower frequently makes noise which I can stop by putting finger pressure on it.
3. There is another sporadic high pitched noise that comes from the inside of the stove that I have not found a source of yet.
4. The fire often goes out when I run it on the low speed over night.  It did last night.
5. The door glass gets very dirty very quickly.  I could run the Whitfield three days between cleaning and the Breckwell must be cleaned every day.  It's somewhat better if it is run on level 3 but the outside temp has to be in the low 20s or teens to require level 3.
6. I have to adjust the combustion air damper each time I change the burn level to get the proper burn.

I have contacted both the dealer and the manufacturer numerous times.  They have both given me several "fixes" to try.  None of them worked.  Breckwell has said that they have done all that they can do and that it is the dealers problem.  The dealer finally sent me a new blower to try and this may fix the blower noise...but I doubt it.  These are design problems.  Note that I have run the Whitfield for 2 years and it had none of these problems.  I may just buy a new starter for the Whitfield and put it back in service.  The bad part is that I really like the way the Breckwell looks and heats...but I can't put up with the noise and other faults.  I can't believe that Breckwell feels no obligation to make this stove work or replace it with one that does.
Bottom line is: If you are looking for a pellet stove, consider the problems that I'm having before you buy a Breckwell.  I've now found several other people talking about problems with the new Breckwell products.

qweaver,
sorry to hear your problems, i have a breckwell pellet stove.just love it   to address your first problem of cleaning everyday, change the brand of pellets (to many fines) good hardwood pellets won't give you much ash. i clean mine once a week. when running on low setting you need your damper shut all of the way , 2-3 setting have your damper set at half open, your flame should look more like a blow torch than a lazy flame. the first thing i would do is try a differant brand of pellet, good pellets will make most of the other problems go away. far as making noises, is the stove sitting flat so one corner isn't touching this will give viberation sounds, adjust your hinge so it fits up flat so the magenet holds.if nothing helps fix the problem let me know i know people that can help.
i'm no way associated with breckwell, in fact i had never heard of them until i started looking for stoves
