#2   why is it when i buy a husky chain for my 350 it cuts sooo well?  do other new chains cut this well?  should i expect the guy who sharpens my chains to do such a good job?

Hi Joshua, have you seen any modern saws that didn`t have a muffler? Do you mean a modified muffler for more power?

The new Husky chain that cuts so good is actually an Oregon. If your sharpened chains don`t cut atleast as good as a new chain they aren`t sharpened properly. I hope you aren`t paying the guy who sharpens your chains if they don`t cut as good as a new one, but unfortunately this is a common scenario. A properly filed chain will outcut a factory grind every time. Do your self a favor, get a few files, a guide, and a depth gauge guide and practice, practice, practice. Eventually you will get the hang of it and you wonder why you ever paid someone to butcher your chains with a grinder.

If you have specific filing questions please feel free to ask, there are many expert filers here who will offer advice and like so many other things there is often more than one way to properly skin a cat. Techniques that work for me may not fit you and vice a versa.

There is a stock muffler on every 066, a modified muffler is available.

All new chains should cut well, you should expect the same results from the person who sharpens your chain but it all depends on the individual.

Joshua,
One thing you should do is go to the oregon chain site and poke around. They have some good info on types of chains and how to sharpen.
You will do yourself a big favor if you spend a little time and learn how to sharpen your own chains properly. It's reall not that hard, I was able to learn it.

Here are some keys.
1. go to your dealer and tell him you need the right file and a file guide.
2. Ask your dealer what angles you should be filing to.
3. clamp your saw bar in a bench vise, don't try to file on the ground or truck tail gate when you are learning.

Once you know how to sharpen it properly, stop when you first notice the saw is not cutting really well and it only takes a few strokes per cutter to get the chain in tip top shape.

If you have someone else sharpen your chain, you tend to cut until it won't cut any more and then it is really hard to get the chain sharp again.

Good Luck,

Rob

Call John Walker, and check out the link below.

I bought modified mufflers for my 046 and 066 from them.

Modest performance gains, but they sound REALLY COOL ;D.
